International academic community, local community, private sector, research and applied research, guests at Costa Navarino coming from around the world.

2009 -

Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO), the outcome of the cooperation between Stockholm University, the Academy of Athens and TEMES S.A. - Developers of Costa Navarino, is dedicated to the study of climate change and its impacts on the natural environment and human activities in the Mediterranean. Located at Navarino Dunes, the first resort area in Costa Navarino, NEO is fast becoming a dynamic hub for modern environmental research, where scientists from all over the world are able to exchange knowledge and ideas while, at the same time, developing new research tools and methods.

The operation of NEO presents to the world a real example of how the academic community and the private sector can work together to promote sustainability. In addition to the research taking place at NEO, emphasis is given to the education and training of graduate students and new researchers. For this reason, special courses and field trips, training workshops and summer schools are organized, and postgraduate and PhD students are already involved in NEO research activities.

Costa Navarino, Messinia

ΝΕΟ’s presence in Messinia is of significant importance not only for the region, but also for the country, as it places Messinia and Greece in the forefront of research and education in environmental issues. World-class scientists conduct research in Messinia, studying its natural and anthropogenic environment. Besides the scientific community, NEO is accessible to visitors, schools and Universities through Navarino Natura Hall, the environmental interactive exhibition center which is located at Navarino Dunes, Costa Navarino. The center was formed through the partnership between Navarino Foundation, the University of Stockholm, the Academy of Athens, the NGOs HELMEPA, Hellenic Ornithological Society and Organization Earth and is dedicated to the Messinian nature and current environmental issues. Also, through the series of open events entitled “café-NEO”, NEO is disseminating scientific knowledge and presenting current environmental topics to the wider public.

Through NEO, TEMES has found valuable partners in the effort to materialize the company’s vision: to place Messinia, through the development of Costa Navarino, among the top sustainable tourism destinations worldwide.
