MUNICIPALITY OF GREVENA

The "Mushroom feast" was integrated into the framework of the carnival events that Municipality of Grevena organized and was considered a good change to exploit a period of tourism for the region in order the local associations and producers to promote a competitive natural product of the district of Grevena, the mushroom.

All citizens and tourists who attended the festivities organized by the Municipality of Grevena.

One-day event (11th of March, 2016).

On Friday, March 11, 2016 in the city's central square were distributed free mushroom dishes that were prepared by Mushroom Friends of Greece, the Mushroom Friends of Western Macedonia and the Mushroom Museum (in Lavda, Grevena). The event was accompanied by local folklore orchestras while attendees could watch the traditional custom of "marriage" performed by the students of the city's high schools.

All the necessary supplies for disposable cutlery had been made entirely from the Purchasing Department of the Municipality of Grevena.

On that day, attendees enjoyed approximately over 1500 portions of different dishes with mushroom base. Tourists received brochures of mushroom organizations and some directed at local stores to buy raw mushroom materials.

Municipality of Grevena hopes with such and similar actions to strengthen the local economy and exploit tourist comparative advantage over other municipalities based on massive mushroom production in grevena countryside. Moreover in the future Municipality would like to promote and develop the scientific interest upon mushrooms by recording, study and identification of specific and rare species that thrive in the wider region of Grevena. The  promotion actions can help to apply indirect pressure from the public to change the legislative framework concerning the collection and sale of wild mushroom.
