The Municipality of Larissa is the capital of the region of Thessaly in Central Greece. The total area of the municipality is 335.12 km² with a population of 160.000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Objective Action

Our goal is to awaken children's environmental conscience and to propagate good practices of waste management processes.

 

Target Audience

Children 9-12 years old (primary schools).

 

Duration

May 2015 to November 2015.


Description

At first place a painting contest with the environmental theme “The earth hero” between children of Larissa first grade schools was held.

At a second phase this contest was the motive of a workshop during which children visit the painting exhibition, observed the paintings and talk about earth heroes and their role to the planet rescue. Then children participated in games such as putting recyclable and non-recyclable materials in the right bin. They also played roles in a theatrical scenery of a whole recycling process from home to the municipal recycle factory.

Impact on Society

Children learnt all about recyclable or reusable materials and how to distinguish the hazardous waste materials (batteries ecc).

Also, they became familiar with good practices of recycling processes in home and in school, the proper waste hierarchy and, in general, the basic principles of proper waste management.

Workers Participation

4 employees of waste disporal and recycle Department of Larissa Municipality (two qualified- an Chemical Engineer and a lab Chemist, and four non-qualified Assistants.

Benefits for Οrganization

We made an assessment of weaknesses and strengths of Municipal waste management projects and services towards civilians.

We also believe that teaching children can be achieved a higher quality of recycling but this needs some time to be measured. Children are definately better students than adults.
