Objective Action

Coca-Cola supports young people and stands by their side with programs aimed at boosting youth entrepreneurship and employment. To this end, in 2015 and 2016 Coca-Cola, with support from The Coca-Cola Foundation, brought the Entrepreneurship School to Greece in order to inspire the country’s young people to chase their dreams, put their ideas to practice, broaden their entrepreneurial horizon and dare to innovate.

Target Audience

The Entrepreneurship School is targeted at young aspiring entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35.

Duration

The Entrepreneurship School was held for the first time from 30 November to 4 December 2015. The next two educational weeks were held in 2016, from 3 to 7 October in Athens and from 7 to 11 November in Thessaloniki.

Description

The Entrepreneurship School is an innovative educational method for young aspiring entrepreneurs, without any professors, as the role of professors/mentors is assumed by established entrepreneurs. It is held annually in Brussels and Hong Kong and has recently expanded to other cities, such as Madrid, Nairobi, Milan and Geneva. In Greece, the School has been held three times since 2015, providing more than 300 young people in total with the opportunity to develop, to be inspired, to become exposed to innovative ideas and practices and to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

After its highly successful first edition in Greece in 2015, the School returned to Athens in October 2016 and also visited Thessaloniki, for the first time, in November. Each educational week lasts for 5 days, during which over 100 young people work in teams of 10 to put together their own business plans, under the mentors’ guidance. At the end of the week, the teams present their work to the jury, which decides the grand winner.

Impact on Society

In these difficult times for Greece, Coca-Cola has managed to provide inspiration and to help the country’s young people realize that, with their will and hard work, they can make their dreams come true.

More specifically:

  • Applications for participation rose by 200% in 2016 compared to 2015.
  • Over 300 persons participated in the 3 educational weeks held.
  • Over 40 established entrepreneurs visited the three Entrepreneurship Schools to support the young participants.
  • 4 young people were able to travel to Madrid to attend a two-day entrepreneurial workshop at the world-renowned IE Business School of Madrid.
  • 20 young people will participate in the next Venture Garden program in the spring of 2017. Venture Garden is a comprehensive, 14-month entrepreneurship education and mentoring program.
  • A flood of positive comments from the participants, about how the Entrepreneurship School experience changed their perspective of their professional development – in other words, that one finds work not only by looking for work but also by creating one’s own business.

Working with Organization

For the implementation of this initiative, Coca-Cola partnered with international non-profit organization ThingYoung. ThingYoung is the first think tank focusing on young people. It aims to make the world a better place for young people by carrying out high-quality research on their opinions and by including them in decision-making processes.

Additionally, in 2016 Coca-Cola worked with Venture Garden, the comprehensive, 14-month entrepreneurship education and mentoring program, securing a position in the program for all the members of the winning teams.

Workers Participation

Under this initiative, both times when the School was held in Athens, the participants visited the offices of The Coca-Cola Company in Greece, where they met with company executives and discussed various issues, such as how to integrate Social Media in their business plans. They also received valuable advice on the current labor market requirements and were inspired by the personal experiences which the executives shared with them.
