Objective Action

One of the main aims of the Regional Unity of Evros is to tie education more closely to culture, offering the opportunity for the educational community of the region to get acquainted with the area in which they live, study and work. Taking the above into account, this particular cultural guide can be used by the teachers as a «tool» in order to get acquainted with or enrich their knowledge about the cultural wealth of the region, as well as impart this knowledge to their students. It could be also useful for older students, those who wish to explore their region.

This guidebook is available on the official website of the Regional Unit of Evros, where anyone can read it and print whatever interests him (http://www.peevrou.eu/index.php/menu-nomevrou/ menu-gnorimianomevrou).

Its printed version is available free to schools and libraries of the Regional Unity of Evros and throughout the whole Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Also, the guidebook is promoted at travel agencies, hotels and educational or cultural institutions, which are interested to acquire it for similar purposes. It is also presented as a gift to official guests.

The guidebook aims to highlight museums, monuments and sites of archaeological or artistic interest of the Region as an ideal destination for school field trips. Moreover, it aims to contribute to the growth of cultural and sports tourism in the region. The English edition of the book will soon be issued.

 

Target Audience

The educational community, namely teachers, pupils and their parents, but also all residents and visitors of Evros from Greece and abroad.

Description

It is a cultural guidebook that contains a brief historical overview along with other useful and practical information regarding archaeological sites, monuments, museums and art galleries located in the area, but also about educational programs carried out in some of them. It is an easy to read guide for children and adults, for families, for tourists or travellers who want to get acquainted with the region of Evros, its archaeological - historical monuments and other cultural sites.

It is a useful 193 colourful paged book, sized 20x14 cm., enriched with plenty of photographs. The informational material is derived both from literature research and collaborating institutions. The guide has a simple form, using a language and a structure understandable even to younger readers.

It is divided into three distinct sections, which can be used separately or in combination, depending on the interests of each reader:

Section A: The most important archaeological sites and historic monuments of Evros.

It gives an information regarding sites open to the public, sites where students can come in organized groups and others suitable for a family or individual tours, as well as on accessibility of sites by bus or on foot etc. Complete information is given on each monument or historical area, including working hours, entrance fee (if any) and other necessary contact information, usually in a frame at the lower edge of the page.

Section B: All types of museums and collections, galleries and other cultural centres.

Section C: Educational programs carried out in museums and archaeological sites of the region of Evros. It provides all the necessary information, such as the description and purpose of each program, target age group, duration, number of participants, participation fee (if any) and contact details.

Finally, the guidebook concludes with a reference list of photographs, printed and internet sources used, for documentation and purposes of further study.

This book represents a useful educational tool that helps people to experience the cultural richness of the Evros region and, at the same time, a pleasant guide for all ages and tastes, which facilitates better planning of tours to sites of great historical interest and natural beauty. Finally, it contributes to promotion of the cultural wealth of the Evros region outside its borders, and, by increasing the number of visitors, boosts the Region’s economic development.
