Objective Action

The impressive penetration of technology in young age groups, the increased use of internet by children, as well as the simultaneous increase in complaints to the competent authorities for child exploitation cases have indicated the urgent need for educating and raising the awareness primarily of parents, but also the children themselves, regarding the proper use of the internet. The dimensions the loss of control in internet use by children has taken, along with the consequent tremendous impact, made it urgently necessary to take on responsible measures. The numbers speak for themselves:

  • 87% of children surf the net every day, while the mobile phone comes first in frequency of use as a means of communication with friends
  • 56% surf the net only from home
  • In 36% of the cases, the computer is in the child's room
  • 34% have met in person someone they have met online

Target Audience

Kids@safety: Internet, Mobile and Child is addressed to parents in order to inform elementary school and high school students’ parents across Greece. Therefore, the target audience are parents aged 30-55 years old, who wish to raise their children in a safe internet environment.

Duration

From 2010 until today. And we keep going….!!!!

Description

Under the Corporate Responsibility Strategy, since 2010 WIND has designed and implemented a comprehensive awareness-raising campaign entitled Kids@safety: Internet, Mobile and Child, conveying the creative message "Watch out for ...". On this basis, plenty of electronic and printed material has been developed covering the different needs of each age group: 5-7 years, 8-10 years and 10+. It is worth mentioning that the communication material has been entirely created under the scientific supervision and guidance of the renowned child psychiatrist, Professor Mr. I.Tsiantis. The selection of the strategic partners of the campaign is crucial, and more specifically:

  • The Cyber Crime Unit of the Hellenic Police Headquarters of the Ministry of Citizen Protection
  • The Greek Centre for Safer Internet and the Raising Awareness Action Saferinternet.gr under the auspices of the European Commission.

The campaign started with the creation of the website www.kidsatsafety.gr. This is a complete digital platform addressed to parents and children. The rich content of audiovisual material is regularly updated and the visitor can find interviews of successful professionals from all social areas on the website. Special child psychologists, writers, parents, teachers, etc. offer advice and answer questions that have to do with the proper use of the internet. The platform also maintains close cooperation with both the Cyber Crime Unit and NGOs, such as the Smile of the Child. In addition, on the site the user can find news about Internet safety, surveys, opinion polls, useful addresses in Greece and abroad and downloadable material.

Apart from the microsite, through its successful community on Facebook, Kids@Safety manages to open a dialogue among parents mostly (or sometimes between parents and children) about the safe navigation and proper use of the internet. Moreover, among the main goals of Kids@Safety action is to raise awareness around the dangers of the Internet (e.g. Cyber Bullying), to encourage its proper use, and not to create fear or other negative emotions. On the webpage of Kids@Safety on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/KidsAtSafety), a two-way interaction has been established that allows us to exchange information, communicate and create activities, starting from the digital environment; this is what makes Kids@Safety stand out, showing the way for similar actions.

In 2012, WIND, in cooperation with the Hellenic Police and the Cyber Crime Unit, created the digital platform www.cyberkid.gr which is the official site of the Cyber Crime Unit in Greece. In 2014 the Cyberkid application was presented. The Cyberkid app stands out due to its innovative - not only at European level but also worldwide -  SOS Line - Cyber Alert which enables children to communicate directly (touchscreen call) and in real time with the Operational Center of the Cyber Crime Unit, with the primary aim to ensure the children’s physical integrity, as well as investigate any event that may put their life at risk or threaten them.
