Objective Action

The goal of this action is promoting new products (fertilizers) with low greenhouse gas emissions during their production, that can be used in agricultural crops associated with the food chain.  The environmental impact of fertilizer production (at the plant gate) is evaluated by measuring, calculating and registering their carbon footprint, focusing on their sustainable use.

Target Audience

This project is mainly aimed at manufacturers of products involved in the food chain. They have to choose between various grades and brand names of fertilizers (or products for whose production fertilizers were used) having or no, a carbon footprint declaration. The low certified carbon footprint of a product (fertilizer) is, generally, considered as a market competitive advantage.

Duration

The program started in 2014 at an experimental level; it was completed in 2015 (considered as the base year) and operates integrated in 2016.

Description

As Carbon Footprint of a fertilizer, it is considered to be the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (expressed as equivalent amount of carbon dioxide), which accumulates over the life cycle of the product. This term is international and it makes a sensible and useful Key Performance Indicator of the product impact on climate change.

Specifically, the calculation of the Carbon Footprint for fertilizers, takes into account all greenhouse gases directly emitted from the production process and all the indirect emissions associated with the energy consumed during the production process i.e. electricity and steam. This calculation, also, takes into account the emissions associated with the raw materials, while emissions from the transportation of the product and its final application on the field are not counted in (Emissions from fertilizers production at plant gate).

It is remarkable that the carbon footprint of fertilizers produced by HELLAGROLIP S.A.:

  1. Is lower than the corresponding of products from the competitors in Europe (in case they have already calculated their products carbon footprint).
  2. Is sensitively lower than the average of fertilizers produced in the European Union.
  3. Is within the level considered by the Best Available Techniques for similar production units.

Thus, the comparative results for the Carbon Footprint of fertilizers of HELLAGROLIP S.A., is an indicator of the high technological position of the company in the European and International industrial map.

Impact on Society

All the companies, as well as the individuals that are environmentally sensitive, have the opportunity to recognize the effect of used fertilizers on the environment. Furthermore, they are able to choose a fertilizer with the lowest carbon footprint.

The carbon footprint of the company's products has been reduced to 2.7 kg CO2 per ton of nitrogen (N) of the produced fertilizer.

Initiative Location

In the fertilizers market and, especially, for agricultural crops associated with the food chain.

Working with Organization

There is cooperation with a Certification Body and European Fertilizer Association. The company has, also, cooperation with suppliers of various raw materials in order to buy and deliver only materials with a low carbon footprint.

The company, also, uses transportation with reduced fuel consumption and, therefore, has a low carbon footprint.

Workers Participation

There is an indirect involvement of employees in the carbon footprint of the company’s products.
Employees are focused on predictive actions by taking care of reducing the energy consumption associated with human activity and by trying to limit the accidental emissions from the production process.

Benefits for Οrganization

By measuring, recording greenhouse gas emissions and calculating the carbon footprint of its products, the company is able to set goals, as well as take initiatives on the management of carbon dioxide. This way the company manages to effectively reduce the emissions from the production process and as a result to deal with climate change issues.

Furthermore, by reducing its environmental impacts, the company can achieve significant savings of natural and energy resources (use of materials, water).

The achievement of low product carbon footprints is expected to give a comparative advantage to the products of HELLAGROLIP S.A., increasing their value on the market and, therefore, giving a benefit to the company. The amount of greenhouse gas emissions (in tons of equivalent CO2 per ton of product produced) is being used as an indicator of this action.
