City of Elefsina belongs to the Region of Attica, which established by the project Kallikrates with the combination of pre-existing City of Eleusis and Magoulas' community.

The increase of the recovery of recyclable materials, the reduction of bulky waste volume by fragmentizing them (leading to fewer transports to landfills and backward) and the increase of material reutilization (e.g. sorting timber in order to dispose it to the cement industry as an alternative fuel, sorting and shredding of green materials in order to use it composting) and the alternative management of excavation, construction and demolition waste. Until 2017, it will be utilized the 95% of incoming materials at RMSC.

The Recycled Materials Sorting Center (RMSC) of Eleusis exists since 2005 and it is UNIQUE in the local authority level. In RMSC, are collected bulky wastes (such as old furniture, mattresses, bough etc), construction, demolition and excavation waste materials (CDEWM), that citizens can deposit in almost 100 waste skippers (7m3), installed in Elefsina and Magoula.
Bulky wastes and CDEWM are usually mixed together (very bad practice). Citizens have the possibility to deposit small quantities of CDEWM by themselves in RMSC. Otherwise, they may take advantage of Municipality’s service of waste disposal by paying a fee in order to dispose bigger quantities of this kind of wastes. Electrical and electronic apparatuses, that are not in use, and lightbulbs are temporarily stored in RMSC. RMSC is considered a Municipality’s “green point”. In RMSC, skipper content (such as cardboard, metal, plastic, glass, wood, tires, rubber, electronic an electrical apparatus) sorted and gathered in containers and finally delivered to certified Systems of Alternative Waste Management (SAWM). The rest of the wastes which is not recyclable, shred by a Solid Waste Shredder. Then, these wastes sieve by Waste Sieve. The product of sieving is a fine particle fraction, that consists of soil (debris) and another coarse particle fraction, that consists of the remain materials. Soil (debris) delivered to certified SAWM by small gate fee (in comparison with Sanitary Landfill gate fee). Coarse-grade materials delivered to Sanitary Landfill. Clear debris delivered to the certified SAWM by small gate fee.
If Municipality of Elefsina couldn’t provide this service (RMSC), all these kind of waste materials would end up to landfills and gullies creating huge pollution. This solution provides great environmental and economical benefit to Municipality of Elefsina.
Municipality of Elefsina provides an effective solution to the citizens in bulky waste management and construction, demolition and excavation waste materials. This means cleaner city.

1. In 2013, RMSC recycled 23% of total wastes, in 2014 recycled 50% of waste, in 2015 72% and in first semester 2016 80%. .
2. This percentage means contribution to slowing climate change and reduction of municipal solid wastes management costs.
3. The economic benefit to the Municipality of Eleusis in 2014 was about 130.000€.
