Municipality of Metamorfosi

1st Sculpture Symposium

The urban landscape, in addition to its function as a living space, is also the complex field in which social, economic, political, cultural, spiritual exchanges develop, as well as material and economic transactions, the whole of which ultimately defines human civilization. The role of the Municipalities in the field of shaping and improving the aesthetics of the urban space must be a staff one forcing the formulation of a modern urban renewal policy with a comprehensive consideration of the problems of the urban space and coordinated multi-level interventions, aiming at upgrading the quality of life and at and to the well-being of all citizens. The centuries-old tradition of the Art of sculpture in the piece of land we live on has always had the most important role in shaping urban aesthetics. Here the insurmountable Praxitelis and Phidias created their masterpieces and younger important artists like Giannoulis Halepas and contemporaries like Taki (Panagiotis Vasilakis) and Kostas Varotsos worked.

The sculptors formed their works in an open space, accessible to the public who had the unique opportunity, with free entry, to watch the evolution of the process in all phases (from raw blocks of marble to shaped sculpture). Many schools from all levels of education visited the site as well as other educational institutions with an interest in the subject (for example, we mention departments of Conservators of Works of Art, Archaeologists, etc.) while the interest of the public and the media was very great.

In the Municipality of Metamorfosi, a Sculpture Symposium was held with great success from Saturday 28 April 2018 to Sunday 3 June 2018 on Nemesis Hill (Dilaveri).

In addition to the main purpose of the aesthetic improvement of the city and the upgrading of the environment, the Symposium gave everyone - and especially children and young people - the opportunity to watch how cold, raw and indifferent natural material is transformed into a work of art, thanks to the toil, inspiration and charisma of the artist. Especially the sculptural art, - to which ancient Greece owes a large part of its glory and modern corresponding part of its precious heritage - creates statues, that is, forms and shapes that delight, calm and delight the senses and refine and enrich the human feelings . The fact that billions of people from all parts of the Earth dream of seeing the Parthenon, the Caryatids, the Mercury of Praxiteles or the Venus of Milos, shows the inestimable value of Sculpture.

The acquisition of 7 sculptural works of art, placed in public spaces, in order to add a touch of aesthetics to the city and improve the urban environment.
