Application of Dry Deposit technology of mining residues Use of Dry-stack tailings in the area of Stratoni, Halkidiki

The reduction of the environmental footprint of the mining activity in Halkidiki and the utilization of best available technologies.

Investments in innovative technologies and best available practices concern both industry professionals and the communities in the areas that we operate, as their impact is both economically and environmentally beneficial in multiple ways.

Throughout the operation of Kassandra Mines (>30 years)

Dry-Stacking is gaining ground in the mining industry, as it is associated with a smaller environmental footprint for tailings storage and is also better integrated into the natural environment after reclamation is complete.State-of-the-art tailings management facility Kokkinolakkas, is a consolidated and properly protected dry tailings facility in the area of Madem Lakkos, (Stratoni, Halkidiki). It was designed and built based on industry-leading methods and materials to provide safe, stable, and environmentally responsible storage of mine waste from the Olympias and Stratoni mines, as well as from the earlier mining activity of previous uses (1960-1995). It is a high standard infrastructure and a $100 million investment, created to serve the urgent need to abolish the old disposal sites and create a new integrated site, with the priority of environmental protection.

The adoption of best available practices automatically creates a need for trained and qualified human resources, with the adoption and development of a common culture of environmental awareness and protection, inside and outside the workplace.

Dry stacking has several significant environmental advantages for the areas where it is used:

  • Smaller environmental footprint, due to less land occupation for the storage of tailings.
  • Less water consumption from the dewatering process and its reuse in the production process the solid composition of the deposited residues significantly increases safety by reducing geotechnical risks.
  • Increase in full-time jobs during the project.

Adopting innovative best available practices such as Dry stack tailings technology in our operation meets our key concern of investing in innovative industry practices while reducing our environmental footprint. At the same time, it also creates an immediate need for further education and training of our human resources, resulting in the creation of highly skilled Greek professionals in our operation and more broadly in the mining industry.
