European LIFE FOODPRINT project: Tool for determining & evaluating the carbon footprint of food products

LIFE FOODPRINT: Development of an integrated strategy for reducing the carbon footprint in the food industry sector

The main objective of the LIFE FOODPRINT project was to identify, quantify and implement measures to reduce, the carbon footprint (CF) of the pastry and flour food industry sector along the supply chain while increasing competitiveness through the development of an innovative software tool.

In the context of the project a robust software tool was developed that enables the reliable determination & evaluation of the CF of pastry and flour food products considering direct and indirect activities (energy consumption, water and wastewater management, logistics).

The software tool aims:

  • to evaluate the CF of their products along the supply chain
  • to identify the Carbon hotspots contributing in raising the CF of products along the value chain
  • to quantify the contribution of each activity to the overall CF of each product
  • to develop GHGs emissions mitigation programs for each of the participating food industries and their associated products by incorporating appropriate set of offsetting measures which will be give rise to opportunities for greater energy and resource efficiency, reduced waste & wastewater generation, streamlined logistics and other efficiencies.

The FOODPRINT tool and its user manual are on the project website (www.foodprint.gr).

SEVT priority is the promotion of Sustainable Development. In this context, it has participated in the European project LIFE FOODPRINT with the aim of developing a National Strategy for reducing the carbon footprint of food products, to strengthen its actions to raise the awareness of the Food Industry for the production of products with improved environmental characteristics and to offer food businesses a useful and easy-to-use tool to calculate and evaluate the carbon footprint of their products.

Experts from all participating organizations collaborated for the successful completion of the project.

Project activities took place in Greece & Italy.

What we achieved through LIFE FOODPRINT:

  • The development of a National Strategy for the reduction of the carbon footprint, which presents specific axes of actions for the reduction of carbon emissions from the Food Industry.
  • The increase of awareness of the Food Sector companies for the production of products with improved environmental characteristics through the dissemination activities we have developed.
  • The mapping of emissions of the production chain of specific food products.
  • The development of the FoodPrint tool that identifies and evaluates the carbon footprint of food products.
  • The demonstration of the tool in 8 companies (6 from Greece and 2 from Italy) and the evaluation of more than 100 products.
  • Informing at least 3000 consumers through product labeling.
  • Strengthening the actions of SEVT for the promotion of Sustainable Development.
  • Increase the awareness of the Food & Drink companies on environmental issues.
