Promoting the recycling of aluminum – Contributing to the increase of recycling in Greece

ElvalHalcor's strategic goal is to promote recycling in order to increase aluminum recycling rates in Greece. This action concerns the promotion of aluminum recycling in Greece, through an information and awareness campaign among citizens. An invitation was made to citizens in outdoor spaces, in offices and schools, in order for everyone to actively contribute to the increase of aluminum recycling in our country.

June 2021

We support the recycling campaign "Every Box Counts"

The aluminum rolling sector (Elval) of ElvalHalcor was the major sponsor of the Recycling program "Every Box Counts", held simultaneously in 15 countries across Europe, on World Environment Day 2021. A special initiative on recycling and the environment highlighted the importance of clean outdoor public spaces and informed citizens about the benefits of the circular economy.

On Saturday, June 5, World Environment Day, on beaches and parks, in squares and shopping streets, boys and girls carrying large green backpacks flooded Europe. Their mission? Encourage citizens to keep public spaces clean and help them recycle empty soda and beer cans wherever they are. This original, dynamic campaign that took place simultaneously in 15 countries and 19 locations and is an initiative of the "Every Can Counts" program, on the occasion of World Environment Day and the increase in pollution observed during of the pandemic, so public spaces became the exclusive meeting and sports venues.

In Greece, the main message of the campaign was transmitted with positive energy through the young people participating in the European Recycling Tour 2021 in Thessaloniki on Friday, 4 and Saturday, 5 June 2021 in front of the White Tower, but also in Athens, on the beaches and pedestrian streets of Alimos on the same Saturday. Always following hygiene rules to protect against the coronavirus, the backpackers encouraged citizens to keep the environment clean and recycle the aluminum cans they consume.

Cooperation with the "Pavlos Melas" Municipality of Thessaloniki

Elval, having as its main strategy the recycling of aluminum and in particular the recycling of beer and soft drink cans (UBC), leads the way with innovative ideas and actions aimed at improving the rate of collection of cans after use, to remelt and reintegrate the metal into production and the value chain.

In the context of our cooperation with "Every Box Counts", the "TT Tropa Verde" program and the initiative of the Municipality of Pavlos Melas of Thessaloniki (hps://pavlosmelas.tropaverde.org/news/ 3-tropa-verde) in the implementation of pilot program "Recycling with sorting at the source, in the "school units", we signed a contract with the Municipality to load and transport to our facilities all the used boxes collected and will be collected through these initiatives.

The first round concerned 900 kg, i.e. approximately 66,700 pieces of used soft drinks and beer cans received from the aluminum rolling sector (Elval) of ElvalHalcor, transferred to its facilities, in order to carry out the required process for the re-production of the same product , according to the principles of the circular economy.

Now all the used cans that will be collected by the Municipality of Pavlos Melas, will be received by Elval for recycling at its facilities for recycling. This particular collaboration marks a new form of collaboration between Elval and the Local Government on recycling issues, hoping to strengthen the awareness of education and the interest in the participation of other municipalities and local society bodies. The properties of aluminum are unchanged and it can be reused indefinitely.

For this initiative (promotion of aluminum recycling in Greece), we collaborated with the organization "Every Box Counts" and the Municipality of Pavlos Mela Thessaloniki.

This initiative by Elval - aluminum rolling sector of ElvalHalcor, is the first stage of a larger initiative/strategy to promote aluminum recycling. At this stage of the initiative, there was a collaboration between the executives of the Company's Communication Department, as well as the executives of the Sustainable Development Division of the aluminum rolling sector (Elval) of ElvalHalcor.

For 2022, it is planned to implement a larger internal communication campaign with the aim of ElvalHalcor employees actively participating, collecting the cans they use at home, bringing them with them to ElvalHalcor to be recycled.

Athens and Thessaloniki

To manufacture an aluminum box, as much electricity is consumed as to:

- listen to the radio for 4 hours.

- watch TV for 3 hours.

- turn on a 60W lamp for 5 hours.

- operate a refrigerator for 3 hours.

If the cans end up in the trash, we increase the volume of trash, waste natural resources and energy, and contribute to the greenhouse effect. The used aluminum cans from soft drinks, beers, etc. they are not useless, and in fact there is a financial benefit to those who recycle them.

At the same time, recycling one ton of aluminum leads to the saving of: 4 tons of bauxite, 500 kg of soda ash, 100 kg of limestone, 700 kg of oil, 25 kg of cryolite and 35 kg of aluminum fluoride.

By recycling aluminum, we protect the environment, save energy and reduce the waste of raw materials. Recycling aluminum in relation to its production from primary casting means 95% less energy consumption, 95% less air pollution and 97% less water pollution.

The international production of aluminum is one of the main protagonists in the effort to reduce energy for the production process, limit and control pollutant emissions and maintain at least the quality of the environment. Its recycling is the most important weapon for saving energy and reducing emissions.

In this context, the policy of the aluminum rolling sector (Elval) of ElvalHalcor supports in practice the practice of aluminum recycling by investing significant amounts to continuously increase the scrap absorption capacity in the production process with the aim of exceeding 40% of the total in 2025 Our production.

After the completion of this program, only by recycling the used aluminum cans (UBC) which will correspond to approximately 7.5 Βcans (beverage cans) compared to 0.25 Βcans in 2019 we will contribute to avoiding the use of corresponding primary aluminum and by 1, 0 Mt CO2 call for less emissions.

  • Strengthening the image as a responsible company that cares for the environment
  • Reduction of the percentage of precast aluminum used during the production stage
  • Economic benefits of using recycled aluminum in production
