The Social Laundry of Chania Municipality

The Social Laundry serves people who either have trouble accessing basic amenities such as electricity or clean water or have no household items at all. Through the free provision of our services we are aiming at the improvement of the living conditions as well as the improvement of their self-image and self-respect.

Beneficiaries of the Structure are vulnerable citizens, citizens of Chania: such as homeless, Roma and beneficiaries of social programs.

The Social Laundry was founded in February 2021 with the aim of serving vulnerable  people of Chania Municipality.

Municipality of Chania in March 2021 inaugurated the operation of the first Social Laundry in Greece, as a program of holistic hygiene care. It is a new structure, where vulnerable citizens have access to a variety of benefits.

Specifically, the facilities include: social baths, for the care of citizens' personal hygiene, washing machines and dryers for the cleaning and drying of their clothes, municipal wardrobe for free supply of clothing, footwear and linen. Access to PC and TV, connection to housing, catering, psychological support and counseling services is also provided.

Clean clothes are not only a key component of personal hygiene, but also a symbol of care and quality of life - elements to which we all have rights. The Social Laundry serves people who either have trouble accessing basic amenities such as electricity or clean water or have no household items at all.

The project was implemented with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration, through the REFRAME program.

The contribution of institutions, companies and individuals is also important, who voluntarily strengthen structure's equipments with all the necessary for its normal operation
