Our goal is to develop cost-efficient “green” technologies in the aluminium industry. One of the technologies that the project seeks to develop is the treatment of bauxite residues, which is the key environmental footprint employed in the production of alumina, with the aim of producing pig iron and rockwool.

1st of June 2010 - 30th of November 2014
The European research project «ENEXAL» has developed new technologies for the Aluminum industry. Program Coordinator was the Aluminum of Greece while among the remaining nine partners included important European universities such as the National Technical University of Athens, the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH –) and the Polytechnic of Zurich (ETH).
The pilot unit ΕΝΕΧΑL worked for 18 months, during which processed more than 35 tonnes bauxite residue. Dozens of experimental tests have been conducted, seeking to determine the optimal operating conditions for the furnace, in order to achieve: (a) The optimal production of pig iron, corresponding to 30% of the bauxite residue mass and (b) The production of fluid slag with specific physical and chemical properties allowing its use for producing rockwool.
The quantity of pig iron produced was successfully tested in the production of castiron spheres in a Serbian steel plant. The quantity of the rockwool produced was evaluated in Italy from producers of associated insulation material and was judged most competitive compared to similar existing products. The total of rockwool produced successfully exploited within the factory, as industrial insulating material.
