Objective Action

Education of refugee immigrants in the Greek language, mainly in populations that have difficulty accessing educational structures.

Creation of innovative material for the education of both immigrant users and the wider population of immigrants, especially those belonging to socially vulnerable groups (illiterate, mentally ill, people who have difficulty attending school), but also for educators who teach Greek as a secondary language. Specifically, the material will include the alphabet, emotions, verbs and sentences-dialogues.

Target Audience

Members of the therapeutic community KETHEA MOSAIC

Teachers who teach Greek as a secondary language

Duration

Description

The program "From A to Z" focuses on 3 actions:

1. Greek lessons

Learning Greek to adult immigrants and refugees, drug users (within the KETHEA MOSAIC Addicts Support Center) but also to the general immigrant population (within the KETHEA MOSAIC Prevention).

The classes last for three months, while there is the possibility to continue either at KETHEA MOSAIC, or at another institution where immigrants can be trained  for Greek language exams.

Performing 4 classes, of different levels, depending on the needs of the students. The lessons are held 2-3 times a week, with the principles of adult education, emphasizing not only the learning of the Greek language, but also the "learning of learning" understanding it as a social process and not as an accumulation of information. In this context, art is the guide and supporter of the whole process.

In particular, for the target group with addiction problems, lessons are held (once a week) that concern words and phrases related to the therapeutic community (provided that in their therapeutic planning is their introduction to the therapeutic community). A "Dictionary of Community Words and Phrases" was created in 2012 as part of the European Refugee Fund's "Neighborhood Center" program. This dictionary is the basis for members to become familiar with specific words and phrases and to understand / use them through group and individual training activities.

2. Visits

Visits to educational and cultural sites (archeological sites, museums, theaters, planetarium, etc.), give participants the opportunity to get to know the culture of their new country and give them the impetus to present their own culture and gain multiple through it the procedure.

By taking action (buying tickets, using MMM, route, reading map, questions to find the place), members become responsible.  At the same time, they overcome the fears of contact and communication with Greeks and become acquainted with Greece.

3. Creation of educational material

At KETHEA MOSAIC it has been found that there is no audio-visual material, friendly to immigrants (adults) to be educated in the Greek language. Mainly for adults who have difficulty either due to negative experiences from education in their country, or due to illiteracy, or physical-mental health (substance users, mentally ill, etc.). These people find it difficult to memorize, to concentrate but also to approach the whole educational process positively.

KETHEA MOSAIC has already created some audiovisual material, which, however, must be enriched and accessible both for the general population of immigrants / refugees who want to learn Greek, and for those who educate the specific population.
