Objective Action

The objective of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) actions is to further embed CSR within Imerys strategy and drive systematic continuous improvement of CSR aspects in operations, thereby continuing to reduce risks, unlock opportunities and build capacity for long-term value creation.

The continuous improvement approach, new projects, and scientific studies shall continue to be developed and deployed based on a reinforced framework of solid policies, procedures, improved tools, training, as well as series of maturity matrices upon which Imerys sites are assessed and against which action plans are developed.

Target Audience

CSR actions have multiple target audience and have an impact on all Imerys stakeholders. Identifying stakeholders and gaining an understanding of their needs and expectations is a critical step to foster engagement.

The list of stakeholders groups includes:

  • Banks & brokers
  • Business partners
  • Competitor and peer companies
  • Customers
  • Employees
  • Government authorities
  • Local community members
  • Media
  • Non-governmental organizations
  • Professional associations
  • Shareholders and investors
  • Suppliers and subcontractors

These actions are constantly being strengthened. CSR objectives drive systematic continuous improvement of CSR aspects in operations.

In 2018, the Group announced the launch of its new CSR program named “SustainAgility”. The SustainAgility ambitions are articulated around three main areas - axes as outlined in Imerys CSR Charter, which was updated in 2018. These are:

  • Empowering our people

Making sure employees and the people we work with stay healthy and safe, nurturing talent, promoting diversity & inclusion, fostering social dialogue and safeguarding human rights.

  • Caring for our planet

Protecting the environment, promoting non-energetic resources efficiency, respecting biodiversity, and acting on climate change.

  • Building for the future

Behaving ethically, operating fairly, ensuring a responsible supply chain, engaging with communities and promoting sustainable products and technologies.

Impact on Society

Within the SustainAgility framework, the impact benefits on target audience as well as consistency towards interesting parties derive from the following results:

  • 3% improvement of energy efficiency compared to 2018 results. Example of significant energy saving is achieved by exploiting Milos’ climatic conditions for the natural pre-drying of bentonite, with actual savings of about 7,500 MT of annual heavy oil consumption, corresponding to CO2 emissions reduction in the range of 24,000 MT per annum.
  • Enhancement of biodiversity management plans. Milos site was the winner of 2018 SD Challenge in biodiversity and land restoration category with “Propagation of rare, endemic and endangered plant species” project. SD Challenge is a company-wide annually organized competition.
  • Operation of specialized local department of Land Reclamation in Milos. In the company-owned plant nursery, takes place production and preparation of seeds and plants suited for reclamations. The nursery consists of 864 types of Milos plant species.
  • Operation of Botanical Pathway in Milos, created by cultivating the nurseries’ plants.
  • Transformed a rehabilitated perlite mine in Trachilas, Milos to an organic farming vineyard, with the plant of 22,300 vines in 63 acre area.
  • Operation and support of Milos Mining Museum (MMM). Milos site was the winner of 2018 SD Challenge in community engagement category with the “Milos Mining Museum 20th anniversary” project, where visitors participated in educational actions and programs throughout the year.
  • For 2018, annual institutions of the "ANASTASIA ANTONIADOU" Award (A.A.A.) and the "ANASTASIA ANTONIADOU" Scholarship (A.A.S.) were offered to local community participants. A.A.A. is addressed to both Imerys’ local employees and Milos residents in order to encourage actions and initiatives in the fields of social, cultural and voluntary contribution. A.A.S. is addressed to women graduates of the Milos/ Kimolos senior high schools (Lyceums), who successfully stood the entrance examinations for one of the country’s Universities.
  • Creation of Miloterranean Geo Experience, offering 8 mapped roots (Geo Walks), through a network of carefully marked paths and roads.
  • Material and moral support of the Social Cooperative Enterprise with a special Purpose “Myrtillo”, “The Smile of the Child”, “SOS Children’s Villages”, “Make-a-Wish Greece” and Special Lyceum of Ilion.
  • A minimum of 12 man-hours of health & safety training per employee, with specific and targeted interventions of training. Training concerns not only industry safety issues, but also safety issues outside the workplace.

Initiative Location

CSR actions refer to Imerys operations in Greece (Athens and Milos sites).

Working with Organization

The SustainAgility program was developed taking into consideration a wide range of inputs from internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to publications by expert committees, professional associations, external research and benchmarks, the Group’s Risk Committee, local forums, customer and market signals and reviews of global megatrends.

Workers Participation

Human capital is at the heart of Imerys’ business. Our employees are among the most important stakeholders in Imerys SustainAgility program, where strong emphasis is placed on.

Benefits for Οrganization

Within the SustainAgility framework, the benefits for Imerys sites in Greece derive from the following results:

  • IMERYS Greece S.A. facilities are certified with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS), ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) and BS OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).
  • Reduction of LTA (Lost Time Accidents) for Imerys employees (0 for 2018), deriving also from continuous training in health and safety issues (12 hours/ employee/ year minimum).
  • Improving energy management and practices with the “I-Cube” Program (I^3 – IMERYS Industrial Improvement), which identifies opportunities on production, maintenance, quality and logistics. Matrices for occupational health, geology and mine planning as well as mining operations are also fully integrated into the “I-Cube” program implementation.
  • Active participation in Environmental and Sustainability, industry and CSR committees and councils.
