“ENGINEERS IN ACTION”: A 12-month paid employment program for talented young engineers - ALUMINIUM OF GREECE

Objective Action

This was an action of great social value as it supported, showcased and boosted the prospects of talented young engineers regarding their entry in the labour market. The program "ENGINEERS IN ACTION" includes training, job rotation, coaching and evaluation. Its main objective is to offer young engineers valuable experience, unique expertise and development of their personal skills in a modern industrial "school". Participants will receive the necessary skills for their future professional employment and will also be able to pursue a postion in the organizational structure of ALUMINIUM OF GREECE, according to the company’s organic needs.

 

Target Audience

The programme is addressing to young graduate engineers until 28 years old, without work or with very little working experience.

 

Duration

Focusing the social responsibility philosophy of the Group, the program is designed to support, highlight and enhance the prospects of young talented Engineers to join the labor market, the program is implemented in two annual cycles 2015 - 2016 and 2016-2017.


Description

The program "ENGINEERS IN ACTION" included training, job rotation, coaching and evaluation. Its main objective is to offer young engineers valuable experience, unique expertise and development of their personal skills in a modern industrial "school".

Participants had the opportunity to receive the necessary skills for their future professional employment and the posibility to pursue a postion in the organizational structure of ALUMINIUM OF GREECE, according to the company’s organic needs.

This social initiative of ALUMINIUM OF GREECE is based on the philosophy of the MYTILINEOS Group to support young people, by systematically investing in the improvement of their skills as well as in their acquisition of experience and expertise, substantially contributing to the fight against unemployment and at the same time boosting economic and social development.

Impact on Society

Main results of the first cycle programme “ENGINEERS IN ACTION I” 2015-2016: :

  • Offered a 12 month paid job for 11 Young Engineers.
  • Salaries of Young Engineers: 190.000 (euro)
  • Accommodation & Safety costs: 14.000 (euro) 
  • Training cost: 7.000 (euro)
  • Developed the expertise and experience of all participants through training programmes (100 hours) as well as their involvement in demanding and complex projects in cooperation with the best professionals in the industry.
  • Developed personal skills of Young Engineers through job rotation in real conditions in the main functions of the company, in a wide range of objects.
  • Offered the possibility of further professional networking.
  • The ALUMINIUM OF GREECE hired two Young Engineers 
  • 10 out of 11 Young Engineers entered the labor market in less than three months after completion of the programme.


Initiative Location

ALUMINIUM OF GREECE premices.  ALUMINIUM OF GREECE lprovided free accommodation for the 11 young engineers, for the full duration of their employment, in renovated flats of the plant’s model settlement in Aspra Spitia, Viotia.

Working with Organization

Aluminium of Greece has not cooperated with other bodies for the implementation of the programme.


Workers Participation

The Group Communication department implemented the publicity program. Aluminium of Greece Mytilineos Group Human Resources Department engaged primarily in the candidate selection process. Moreover, the heads of the Group's and Aluminium of Greece main directorates participated  in the initial training of the new engineering. Also, the participation of directors and supervisors in coaching and continuous evaluation of the young engineers who were on their department was very significant.
