Logistics Center of the Attica Region

Located at the eastern end of Central Greece, the Region of Attica covers approximately 3,808 square kilometers. Apart from Athens, within the region there are the cities of Eleusis, Megara, Lavrio, and Marathon, as well as a small part of the Peloponnese and the islands of Salamina, Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Kythira and Antikythira. About 3,750,000 people live in the area, of which more than 95% are residents of the Athens metropolitan area.

It is the first in population and the most densely populated region of Greece, since it is home to the urban complex of Athens, which is the capital of Greece, bringing together 1/3 of the country's population, i.e. 3,761,810 inhabitants according to the 2001 census .



Objective Action

The Logistics Center of the Region of Attica, set up in June 2016, had since its establishment as statutory aim to assist refugees, through the coordinated collection, storage and timely supply of basic necessities and hygiene facilities.

Its purpose has been expanded in July 2018 so as to include the substantial and practical support to socially vulnerable groups of population, in the context of the systematic and coordinated implementation of social protection and public health policies (Legislative Act published in the Government Gazette 138/A/26.07.2018, which has been ratified by Art. 3 of Law 4576/2018 published in the Government Gazette 196/A/27.11.2018).

The Logistics Centre is subject to the statutory supervision of the Regional Vice Governor of South Athens.

The Logistics Center continuously responds to its statutory aim since June 2016 and onwards.


Description

The Logistics Center of the Region of Attica, which was considered by the Council of Europe to be a "best practice", continuously assists solidarity structures and solidarity initiatives, throughout the whole country. For further instructions please follow the link http://www.patt.gov.gr/site/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=18182&Itemid=76 with a view to ensure the optimal operation of the Logistics Center, the fast and effective response to the needs of vulnerable groups of population, regardless of place of residence or domicile, i.e. even if they reside outside the territorial jurisdiction of the Region of Attica.

Impact on Society

1.300 tons of basic necessities and 4 tons of hygiene facilities have been allocated for all categories of beneficiaries until today. The contribution of the Logistics Center throughout the Covid-19 pandemic is of significant importance, through the provision of medical supplies (face masks, gloves, antiseptic hand gel, Rapid Tests) to the employees of the Region of Attica as well as to institutions, social protection and welfare structures, Security Forces etc.  



Initiative Location

The Logistics Center is located to a building of 4.000 square meters (useful floor area). Its use has been granted by the Public Properties Company to the Region of Attica.

Working with Organization

Continuous and systematic cooperation with General Government Bodies, Local Authorities (Regions and Municipalities), entities, citizens etc.


Workers Participation

One civil servant is in charge of the operation of the Logistics Center of the Region of Attica, occasionally assisted by employees under a fixed term employment status. 
Volunteers play an important role in the implementation of various solidarity actions.
