Objective Action

Our goal has a double approach. On one hand, we target in the participation of the children in order to eliminate school drop-out and the growth of their self-esteem and self-confidence. On the other hand, we target to raise awareness on matters of equality, egalitarianism and human rights. Using Mobile School as a tool, our volunteers come frequently in touch with kids that they do not attend school, trying to engage them not only on school lessons but also in subjects such as diversity, hygiene, human rights and so on. This alternative way of education is an initiative that has engage a large number of children, from its beginning. The ultimate target is the redefining of the value of school and education in general for those children.

Target Audience

Roma children and adults, children excluded from school due to family environment, children from refugee families.

Duration

2016 and ongoing

Description

Mobile School is a wheeled, foldable construction that has a full extend of 6 meters. It is built out of blackboard where educational panels can be attached. From the 350 panels that exist, same of the include school type exercises (such as literature and math) while others are discussion panels based on diversity, racism, hygiene and so on. These panels have 3 levels of difficulty.

The initiative of Mobile School is based on volunteering and innovation. The team of Ladies Union of Drama is composed by 20 volunteers of various expertises such as psychologists, social workers, teachers and social anthropologists and by a coordinator, who is in charge for the programming of each intervention. In each intervention there has to be at least 5 volunteers along with the coordinator. Mobile School does not intend to replace institutional school and thus interventions take place in the afternoon. Besides education, the Mobile School and the street workers aim in the growth of the self-esteem and self-confidence of the children. In other words, to build a solid base of trust in the street. Through these interventions we target in the empowerment of the children, the development of basic skills and the psycho-social revitalization of them. As an innovative action mobile School targets not only in the collaboration between street workers and the children but also the collaboration between children themselves and street workers themselves as well.

In May 2015 the team of Ladies Union of Drama started a research in order to calculate school drop-out in Drama and the results were frustrating. Afterwards, there was a sequence of trainings from the NGO Praksis and the Mobile School Organization and after a thorough communication with the Belgium organization of Mobile School we manage not only to train our team but also to acquire a Mobile School for our organization, in February 2017. First interventions started in January 2016, prior to the acquisition of Mobile School. Interventions take place weekly in Roma camps and the Municipal Garden of Drama.
