Objective Action

Disseminating and preserving our cultural tradition by informing students and other visitors about the history of cereals and their contribution to the development of culture and making students aware about the issue of childhood obesity that is plaguing our country, while briefing them about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet. Making students aware about the global warning phenomenon and its impact on food prices and quality and inform them about the impact of the phenomenon of wastage and food waste and on ways of tackling it.

 

Target Audience

Students from 4 to 18 years old and adults from all over Greece and abroad.

Description

Loulis Mills is a Greek family company with a tradition of 234 years presence in the Greek economy and of social action, which ceaselessly continues today. A necessity and obligation to actively offer of Loulis Mills in the field of nutrition and culture, issues which traditionally fall within the company's culture.

The implementation of the Museum “From wheat to bread” took place in 2012, at the St. George Mills building in Keratsini. Basis for the creation of the museum was the collection of folklore and other items on the circle wheat-flour-bread and archives both the company and Loulis family had held for many years and is constantly enriched. These items were accompanied by extensive training program in order to meet the objectives of the Museum.

Opened in 2013 by realizing the vision of Loulis Mills for contribution to society, through the exhibition of these collections. There are daily and free organized school visits where the audiovisual material children learn the history of wheat, traditions and practices around the chain wheat - flour - bread. Also, they learn about the contribution of the bread in the customs of the Greeks and the importance of the Orthodox Christian religion. Takes place a film screening which describes how was the processing of cereals before the industrial age, followed by an interactive game for children to recognize traditional implements.

The museum specifically contains: 

  • 500 “prosphoro” (votive bread) seals from 14 countries that are made from various materials in different shapes and sizes. This is a comprehensive and very interesting collection  
  • 7th century BC figurines depicting the milling and baking of bread  
  • Mill machinery and equipment from 1890
  • Folk art tools and objects on the cultivation of cereals and preparation of bread 
  • Complete history file of Loulis Mills and St. George Mills and many historical figures from other Mills 
  • Interactive bakery, a special section for children with a traditional oven where younger guests participating interactively through kneading and baking their own bread 
  • Traditional stone mill

Moreover:

  • Various educational programs and interactive / experiential events are provided, which have been adapted to the different age groups of the children, in order to achieve the best possible learning outcomes
  • A new section has been completed and will be operational in 2017 that deals solely with issues of environment and modern nutrition, with emphasis on the nutritional needs of children 
  • It has a projection room and lecture, where educational films are screened 
  • It is accessible by people with disabilities 
  • It has a recreation area

Impact on Society

The Museum is open daily for receiving free guided tours by schools as well as adults. To date, in excess of 20,000 people have visited the Museum, with the majority of the visitors being students from 17 regions throughout Greece, 45 areas from Attica and groups from 5 European countries, which have also participated in the educational program, which aims to inform education and awakening on the issues it has set a target of museum and analyzed in the respective section.

480 folders have been sent with educational materials to 60 schools in Attica and 200 folders at school at Fthiotida.

It has participated, in collaboration with other bodies, in 4 workshops, 2 exhibitions and 10 events and performances.

Workers Participation

For the implementation 30 employees were involved from the Management, CSR, Creative, Technical, Technical Advisers, Legal Service, Public Relations, Administration, Finance and Human Resources Departments. People from different departments of the company are involved periodically and as necessary. Two employees are working exclusively daily in the museum.

More than 20,000 people have tour the Museum Louli from wheat to bread, have been informed and know experientially the history and work of Loulis Mills. This provides a transparent and functional manner the company's connection with the social and cultural work to strengthen its social profile. It strengthens the communication with the public which becomes more direct. This is confirmed through the hundreds of letters of visitors and the children's drawings that arrive daily at the museum.

Loulis Mills won the prize "self-service Excellence Awards 2016» for the CSR program has adopted and its contribution to civilization.

Finally the work of Museum is being continuously displayed in dozens of media (TV, radio, newspapers and web).
