MUNICIPALITY OF GLYFADA

Glyfada today

Today, Glyfada is crossed by Vouliagmenis Avenue which divides (or even unites) it into Upper and Lower Glyfada. Kato is bustling, has the shopping center, has entertainment venues, is comparable to a modern city. A city with good transport and a nice beach, with four marinas, with golf, with a football field, with swimming pools with tennis and basketball courts.

A city that throbs with life and movement, a city that hosts "all the tribes of Israel". And Ano Glyfada, which is quieter, with neighborhoods but also with detached houses, away from the heavy traffic, near Ymittos. The ¨Riviera of the East¨ as Mr. Thomas Drikos calls it, in his album "Glyfada" was founded in the Saronic waters which were then crystal clear.

Objective Action

A very serious problem, which has concerned the society of Glyfada for decades, has been definitively resolved. After persistent efforts and serious planning on the part of the municipal authority, an area of 42 acres was initially granted by law in order to build a new cemetery in the city. About 7.2 acres in total were also allotted for road construction. It is worth noting that the old Glyfada cemetery, with an area of only 5 acres, was full, which had created a major social problem in the city in recent years.

Part of this area that was granted will also be used by the air force and there, for the first time, a military cemetery will be created in Attica. This cemetery will be dedicated to the fallen airmen (occupies about 10% of the total area) and a monument will be erected where all 600 or so names of the fallen airmen from the First World War until now will be mentioned.

Description

From 2015 until today, the Municipality of Glyfada, with due care and respect for the environment, proceeded with the necessary technical studies for the initiation and completion of this great project, with significant social implications. A holy temple of modern architectural conception was built within the cemetery area, while approximately 800 new trees were planted. The planting, which was done on the basis of a phytotechnical study, consists of plants that either come from the immediate environment of the area (replanting of existing trees with appropriate processes and preparation by experts), or are found in the wider intervention area (Ymitto) or, finally, are not local flora, but they can thrive, grow and reproduce in the area.

The cemetery was built within the boundaries of the Air Force facilities in Ano Glyfada, where the Telecommunications and Electronic Media Factory (ETHIM) has been housed for decades and will be inaugurated in October. The area of the cemetery begins one kilometer above the last house in the area of Terpsithea, i.e. it is outside the residential zone. The completion of the project reflects its original goal, which was to create a space where the natural environment will dominate, while the final feeling and image of the space will not resemble the usual image of our country's cemeteries, where marble and structured landscape. The burial areas in the largest part of the cemetery do not consist of obvious formations of graves, as is common in most cemeteries of our country, but are covered in larger units that follow the slope of the ground and at the same time preserve the character of its natural configuration.

At the same time, the Municipality of Glyfada built a new perimeter road, with lighting and fencing, to ensure independent access to the new municipal cemetery, as well as the required hydraulic works for the drainage of the cemetery's rainwater. This is a project of great importance for Glyfada and for the whole of Attica.

Impact on Society

Respect for the body of the dead is a consequence of respect for human dignity, as a reflection of the uniqueness recognized in each person while they are alive. The reduction to this fundamental basis of all human rights acts as a legitimizer for two distinct aspects of rights involved in the question of burial: First, the respect for human dignity that mandates the dignified (according to the usual practices of the respective social context) treatment of the human of the deceased and secondly, the right to the private and family life of relatives, on which is founded a certain right to respect their mourning. These rights are served in the best possible way by the Municipality of Glyfada, with the construction of a new municipal cemetery.
