Objective Action

CANAL’s programme goal is to promote and grow the recycling of aluminium cans in Greece. Aluminium recycling is a particularly important and vital practice for Sustainable Development, since it helps greatly, in saving natural resources and energy.

Target Audience

The comprehensive programme to brief, educate and raise awareness about aluminium recycling among school pupils is addressed:

  • To school pupils and teachers
  • To the families of school pupils
  • To society as a whole
  • To general public.

Duration

CANAL has been operating since 2003. Educating the school community in cooperation with the Experiential School started in 2006.

Description

CANAL is a model recycling centre which receives, sorts and packages used aluminium cans, which are then forwarded to ELVAL’s plant at Oinofyta so that they can re-enter the production process, which entails numerous benefits for society as a whole. Major investments have been made to ensure that this process operated by ELVAL uses cutting-edge technologies that are environmentally-friendly. In addition to receiving used aluminium cans for recycling, CANAL also offers educational activities to provide information and raise awareness about aluminium recycling. The comprehensive program on educating and raising pupils' environmental awareness on aluminium recycling , includes:

  • raising students' awareness through special seminars and school competitions at CANAL, where they are taught the procedure of recycling
  • educating students through experiential activities in cooperation with the experiential school
  • raising teachers' awareness and providing special educational material
  • raising local authorities' awareness by participating in projects in the local area
  • raising people's awareness through the internet website www.canal.gr, news bulletins and presentation of the program in seminars and conferences.

Impact on Society

During the period 2003-2015:

  • CANAL collected a total of 4,728,290 kilos aluminium cans, which were sent for recycling.
  • A total of 59,752 school pupils from 1,667 classes, took part in the comprehensive programme to brief, educate and raise awareness about aluminium recycling, among school pupils.

In addition to the aluminium cans it collects, CANAL has also developed a comprehensive programme to brief, educate and raise awareness about aluminium recycling among school pupils. CANAL’s programme consists of two lines of action, one which takes place within the Centre and the other which takes place elsewhere.

1st line of action: Actions at CANAL

School groups, especially from primary schools, visit CANAL daily to learn about the aluminium production process, how it is recycled and the resulting benefits, and about proper environmental conduct. Aluminium can recycling competitions for schools and individuals are also run, as well as events and exhibitions of the artworks produced by school competitions, focusing on recycling and the environment. In the period 2003 to 2015, more than 45,144 pupils from 1,007 school classes attended CANAL info events (by visiting the centre).

2nd line of action: Actions away from CANAL

CANAL in partnership with the NGO QualityNet Foundation and the teachers from the Experiential School "Viomatiko Scholeio", offer hands-on educational courses for primary school pupils. In order to brief and raise awareness among the school community and society as a whole, over the last seven years, innovative educational courses about the environment and recycling have been held with great success. During the 2014-2015 school year, the ‘Life without Garbage: Reduce – reuse – recycle waste' educational programme was presented by the Experiential School "Viomatiko Scholeio" to 521 primary schools (from 30 primary schools), in the Attica and wider Viotia areas. Totally, during the period 2010-2015:

  • We educated 14,608 school pupils (from 660 primary schools)
  • We offered free environmental education materials at 14,087 pupils.
  • We have implemented free experiential training in the context of wider activities flexible zone, to 192 to primary schools in a difficult period, because of the economic crisis.
  • We briefed the school community in a total of 68 areas, about the educational programme
  • We made 14,608 families (or 40,902 people) more aware.

Initiative Location

CANAL operates in Marousi in Attiki, while the educational programs of Experiential School "Viomatiko Scholeio" are implemented at schools (primary education) in Attiki and Viotia.
