Dealing with humanitarian crises - "The Smile of the Child" next to refugee and migrant children

"The Smile of the Child" has supported more than 1,200,000 children and their families. Children victims of all forms of Violence, Children victims of Extinction, Children with health problems, Children who are or are threatened with poverty, have found a solution.



Objective Action

"The Smile of the Child" timelessly supports children refugees and immigrants who are in Greece.

Furthermore, the Organization in response to emergencies, along with the support of the tens of thousands of children in Greece in need due to the deep and perennial economic crisis, made superhuman efforts to support the thousands of refugee and migrant children who came to our country, alone or accompanied by their parents.

The implemented actions are provided by the specialized staff of the Organization with the valuable assistance of volunteers and always with the aim of substantially covering the innumerable and multifaceted needs that arise daily nationwide.

The aim is to provide essential services in the areas of Health and Safety.

 

Target Audience

Refugee and migrant children and their families as well as unaccompanied minors and parents looking for their children.

Description

With a team of qualified scientific staff, "The Smile of the Child" supports children refugees and immigrants nationwide.

The most important actions are:

  • Immediate and on-site emergency management by performing on-site intervention and receiving complaints.
  • Activation of all services in cases of disappearance of a minor or children at risk (Amber Alert Hellas, European Child Alert Automated System (ECAAS), Search and Rescue Team "Thanasis Makris")
  • National Helpline for Children SOS 1056 (available 24/7, free of charge)
  • European Hotline for Missing Children 116000 (available 24/7, free of charge)
  • European Helpline for Children and Adolescents 116111 (available 24/7, free of charge)
  • Provision of preventive medical examinations and treatments
  • Transfers with the seven Mobile Medical Units for newborns and children upon arrival of children in the country
  • Providing all kinds of support to children who are experiencing chronic or non-medical problems
  • Support and interconnection of families with the relevant state bodies in Greece and abroad
  • Hospitality of unaccompanied children in cooperation with competent bodies (11 Homes and 3 Day Care Homes)
  • Hosting families in specific spaces as needed
  • Support on a material, emotional and social level with the aim of directly meeting the basic needs of families
  • Coverage of in-kind needs through Support Centres 
  • Reunification of children with their families in cooperation with the relevant bodies
  • Distribution of flyers to provide information (Greek, English, French, Arabic and Farsi) for the support lines 116000 and 116111
  • Creative employment for children

Impact on Society

From 29/2/2016 until 30/6/2016  "The Smile of the Child" supported thousands of children refugees and immigrants.

In specific:

  • Action in 19 places nationwide
  • 15,890 material aid actions addressed to children and 950 to adults
  • 3,523 medical examinations in children
  • 1,567 transfers of newborns and children
  • 98 support actions for hospitalized children
  • Provision of 5,176 medical examinations to children
  • 1.999 actions for creative employment in children
  • 70 calls to the support lines SOS1056, 116000 & 116111 to manage serious issues
  • Distribution of 20.000 information leaflets regarding the European lines 116000 and 116111, officially operated by the Organization in Greece

Working with Organization

Each action for children refugees and migrants implemented by "The Smile of the Child" is carried out in collaboration with the competent institutional bodies (Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Health, Coast Guard, Hellenic Police, Fire Brigade, National Emergency Aid Center (EKAV)., (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ΚΕΕLPNO), National Health Operations Centre (EKEPY_, public hospitals & health centers, regions, municipalities) to ensure transparency and quality for the services provided.

Workers Participation

The specialized scientific staff of the Organization participate in this action; social workers, psychologists, rescuers, pediatricians, nurses, etc.

At the same time, the participation of hundreds of volunteers is decisive. In the actions implemented by the Organization from 29/2 to 30/6, a total of 370 volunteers of various ages and specialties were employed cotributing to this cause with a total of 1,530 hours of work. At the same period exclusively  61 doctors voluntarily provided medical examinations to children.
