Thematic Consultation: "We are talking about the Environment" - Metallurgy Department MYTILINEOS

Objective Action

The partnership with the Social Partners, is an official institutionalized process of MYTILINEOS which has a dual goal: strengthens the principle of prevention of the company mainly in environmental and social issues, while allowing it to better understand the issues of Sustainable Development and formulate actions and plans action (where required) to meet their expectations in the best possible way. In this direction and in the context of the celebration of the World Environment Day, the Metallurgy Department of the company, successfully implemented its second annual thematic dialogue with the groups of its Social Partners, on the topic "Talking about the Environment", at the premises of the ALUMINUM factory of GREECE in Ag. Nikolaos of Boeotia.

Individual objectives of the action were:

1) The best possible information of the Social Partners on environmental issues covering a information gap that has been identified by the company.

2) The development and strengthening of the positive attitude of the Social Partners towards the environmental initiatives and policies of the Metallurgy Sector, by presenting as much documented data as possible and

3) The exchange of views and the submission of proposals of the Social Partners of the company.

Target Audience

The consultation was attended by representatives of the Municipalities, the relevant services of the Region of Central Greece, the Chamber of Boeotia, the academic community, the school community, the local media, the Hellenic Center for Marine Research - ELKETHO and partner companies and certification bodies, who were informed in detail about the policy, the basic principles and the way of managing the environmental issues of the company.

Description

The Consultation focused on:

In the presentation of the environmental management system of ALUMINUM of GREECE (application and advantages),
In the studies and business investments that have been implemented in recent years, contributing significantly to the improvement of the environmental footprint.
In the Protection Activity and the development of the solid & liquid waste management system, as well as air pollutants with the presentation of specific KPI’s.
In the policy of environmental restoration of the exploitable land, through real case studies, by the representatives of the SA subsidiary, DELPHI-DISTOMON
In the field of Research and Innovation with emphasis on the important initiatives that have been implemented for the utilization of bauxite residues.
The Consultation ended with an open discussion and the submission of proposals by the participants, followed by a lunch with the participants. The proposals and conclusions of the consultation will be used to enrich the environmental policy of the Metallurgy Sector, in the context of the continuous responsible development of the company.

Innovations

The Metallurgy Department of MYTILINEOS in the framework of the Consultation:

1. Adopted the application of CO2NS / EVENT, which concerns the Calculation and Neutralization of the Total Carbon Footprint of the event, according to the innovative methodology of CO2 Neutral Seal certification. By adopting this initiative, the company made the event Carbon Neutral by calculating the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by its implementation, and then proceeded to purchase high quality carbon credits, which correspond to the amount of these emissions. Through this market, the company's Metallurgy Department has contributed to the support of certified, in operation climate and environmentally beneficial projects, such as renewable energy and natural resource conservation projects implemented in various parts of the world.

2. Published for the first time a special leaflet to promote its policies, principles and key results in the field of Environmental Management and Climate Change, entitled Environmental Protection as a key business option. emphasizing its intention for the better information of all its Social Partners, but also for any other interested party.

Impact on Society

ALUMINUM of GREECE proceeded to evaluate the consultation by sending a special 5-point satisfaction questionnaire (from 1 low to 5 high) to all participants.

The Consultation was evaluated at three levels: a) Overall picture, b) Planning & c) organization with individual variables to make up each category, while it was possible to record comments and suggestions for improvement. The response of the Social Partners in the evaluation process reached 55%, while a total of 17 comments / suggestions for improvement were recorded. Overall, the new consultation process, as evaluated by the participants, was characterized as very positive.

Finally, the main topics that the participants focused on were:

The perspective of investments, in more environmentally friendly technologies, in the factory of ATE.
The possibility of prospects for the sale of stone wool and cast iron products, as a result of the utilization of bauxite residues through the European ENEXAL program, in the Greek market.
The possibility of utilizing bauxite residues in the overlap of rural roads.
The results of the studies carried out on the issues of protection of the marine environment.
The necessity of the company's cooperation with university postgraduate programs, for the dissemination of knowledge related to environmental management and its experience from its participation in research efforts to postgraduate students in the field of Geosciences and Environment.
