Description

The Active Citizen at school

• How can I adapt my teaching methods to a constantly changing world while developing the skills of my students and cultivating values such as solidarity, cooperation and justice?

• How can my teenage students actively participate in a complex and interconnected world full of stimuli and challenges?

• How can local authorities address these challenges in partnership with schools?

The Walk the Global Walk program provides educators with valuable opportunities to collaborate on global issues related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It introduces models of active youth participation and leadership, while creating an ongoing dialogue around active citizenship at global and local levels.

Participation in the program includes:

• Training of teachers through experiential activities based on Education for the Active Citizen.

• Support for teachers during the implementation of the program.

• Workshops for students on leadership and active citizenship.

• Creation of individual groups of "young leaders" from students in schools with the aim of raising awareness among their classmates.

• Organization of actions for the Week of Action for Sustainable Development (SDG Week).

• Student participation in the Global Walk for sustainable development.

• Participation of at least 5 students and 1 teacher in the International Summer Schools in Portugal (2019), Italy (2020) and Wales (2021).

Innovative features:

The most important innovative feature of the program is the Student-centered approach and Student-to-Student training methodology

Students through their participation in the program become part of a process to cultivate a deep learning and understanding about the issues of the Sustainable Development Goals and human rights, to consider and evaluate what they have learned and then to take action. Young leaders will become trainers and be called upon to unlock the potential of their peers to become growth agents.

Teacher reinforcement:

Walk the Global Walk provides educators with tools to integrate Active Citizen Education into the school curriculum. The aim is to reduce the distance between global challenges and their daily lives.

Use of New Technologies:

The development and use of the interactive platform as the main "hub" for all project activities will promote interaction between students and teachers within and between different countries, making them feel part of a larger and global community.

SDG Week: 12-18 April 2018
Week of Action for Goal 11
• Photography contests
• You performed theatrically
• Cultural heritage video from the Fort of the Tribe
• Visits to the Clan fortress
• Recycling 16,000 pieces and transporting them to the recycling park
• Informing citizens by distributing leaflets
• Tree planting inside and outside the school
...were just some of the actions that took place in schools during SDG week.

The main impact of the actions was to make the 11th goal of the UN recognizable in the local community and this was achieved to a very large extent, due to the active participation of the schools, the dozens of events that took place in all the local municipal units of the Municipality of Fili, i.e. in Zefyri , in Hasia, in Zofria, in Ano Liosia, in the historical center of the Municipality, etc.

Initiative Location

The action of the program is the eleven European countries participating in the program, which include many important regions and municipalities of Europe. For example, the program includes the Regions of Tuscany in Italy, Normandy in France, the region of Wales in the United Kingdom. Also very important municipalities such as Bucharest in Romania and Sofia in Bulgaria.

As for Greece, the place of action is the Municipality of Fylis, a municipality of 45,000 inhabitants with severe social and environmental problems, as the only landfill in the Prefecture of Attica is located in the Municipality of Fylis, with the environmental effects resulting from this activity.

Working with Organization

For the first time, the Municipality of Fylis works closely with the internationally recognized Non-Governmental Organization Action Aid Hellas. This is a pioneering effort of cooperation between a local authority and an NGO, which proves that it is possible for municipal authorities and NGOs to cooperate in order to achieve the best possible result. In this way, it is possible to bypass the entanglements of the Greek bureaucracy and, on the other hand, to have a reliable partner, which has been tested in the past in dozens of other European programs.

It is also the first time that the Tribe Municipality cooperates with such large European municipalities, universities and other NGOs. Indicatively, large European municipalities participate in the program such as the municipality of Sofia, the municipality of Bucharest, the region of Normandy, the region of Wales and the region of Tuscany. So, for the first time, the Tribe Municipality is in direct talks with large regions of Europe and with large municipalities - capitals of countries. Also with major universities abroad, as well as with private companies such as Oxfam Italia, which is one of the largest European program management companies in Europe.

At the same time, the cooperation that arose with the Directorate of Secondary Education of Western Attica is important. In this way, two government bodies collaborate directly to achieve a common goal. The full support of the education and training department of the Directorate of Secondary Education of Western Attica paves the way for the future, while already on the occasion of the Walk the Global Walk program, the 2020 program will be submitted for the financing of student education abroad through Erasmus+

Workers Participation

The first volunteers who worked for the program were the dozens of middle school and high school teachers of the Municipality of Fylis, who dedicated dozens of hours of personal employment for the program, beyond their normal working hours. Without them, the implementation of the program would be impossible.

Also, the employees of the Tribe Municipality voluntarily participated in all the actions of the program. Whether they are employees of the Department of Economic Development who participated in all aspects of the program or workers of the green service, who helped with the tree planting actions that the students requested as an action.

And of course the students of the Tribe Municipality were the soul of the events. Hundreds of children actively participated in the week of events, either by making recyclable projects, or by creating a theater performance, or with concerts, etc.

Benefits for Οrganization

Although the benefits for the Tribal Municipality are not measurable, since the debriefing video of the final event highlights the potential benefits for the Municipality, from the participation of the citizens alone, there are nevertheless quantitative results.

  • Dozens of Educators based in the Municipality of Fylis were trained
  • Hundreds of Students participated in the Program
  • 80 students became "Youth Leaders" and trained their classmates
  • Dozens of cultural events, excursions, actions, visits to the borders of the Municipality of Fylis
  • Increase by 10% of the quantities of recyclable materials on the days of the actions in the bins of the Municipality of Phylisasik

And the most basic quality feature:

The voice of the students of the Municipality of Fylis was heard in 11 countries, but also in Brussels, since the Municipality of Fylis was the only municipality that was not satisfied with community funding, but also implemented its own resources in the implementation of the program, receiving the credit from the European Join.
