The Women's Organizations Meet-up for Education and Networking (WOMEN) program is a skills development and networking program for non-profit organizations and groups active in the field of gender equality and women's empowerment in Greece, which was held for the first time on 21- 23/10, by the Women On Top Organization for the Professional Empowerment of Women, with the support of the US Embassy. in Athens and under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Family Policy and Gender Equality. The program activities took place at Impact Hub Athens and HIGGS and brought together over 40 representatives of groups and organizations from all over Greece.
During the 3 days, the participants had the opportunity to attend workshops by Allyson Zimmermann, Executive Director for Europe, Middle East & Africa, Catalyst and Jennifer Iannolo, Founder, IMPERIA, as well as by experienced Greek women and Greek academics, journalists and trainers, who shared with them expertise and tools on critical issues faced by the majority of organizations dealing with equality issues in the country: the activation of men in the effort to combat sexism, the value and the mechanisms of highlighting positive role models for the empowerment of women, the role technology plays in gender equality issues and the obstacles faced by companies and organizations in their efforts to implement the principles of gender mainstreaming.
At the same time, they were given the platform to talk to teachers of all levels and to answer questions from teachers and professors in relation to introducing the issues of equality and empowerment in the educational process.
"We are proud and optimistic about everything that has happened in the last few days in the framework of WOMEN, as we have seen unfold before our eyes the multitude, the diversity, the potential and also the vision of groups that have great things to offer to the effort for gender equality -all together but also each individually" said Stella Kasdagli, co-founder of the organization Women On Top, at the close of the program.
"Gender-based violence, inequalities at work, social stereotypes, discrimination in education are problems that require concerted action from all of us, and this three-day event was our attempt to bring together individuals and groups who can create substantial change" said Penelope Theodorakakou, also co-founder of Women On Top.
"For us at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, working with Greek partners to empower women has been a priority of our programmatic planning for the past few years," said Cindy Harvey, Director of Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Athens. "It is a fundamental part of our commitment to advance US-Greece relations, as well as our shared goals of security, stability and prosperity."
