Objective Action

The integration of the principles of sustainable development into Elval's corporate governance model (ElvalHalcor's aluminum rolling sector) through the implementation, certification, and continuous development of the ASI Performance Standard of the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI).

Elval has been participating in ASI as a member since 2019, aiming to certify its processes for responsible aluminum production and demonstrating its commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development and responsible corporate governance.

As a global initiative, ASI is made up of producers, users and stakeholders in the aluminum value chain with the common goal of achieving "responsible aluminum production".

Elval's participation in the ASI initiative and its certification in principle according to the first ASI Performance Standard (July 2020) and then to the second ASI Chain of Custody Standard (August 2021) reflects the company's commitment to the principles of sustainable development and its integrated ESG strategy, for the responsible supply, production and management of aluminum thus covering the entire value chain.

Target Audience

The certification with the first ASI Performance Standard applies to all the facilities of the aluminum rolling sector (Elval) in Oinophyta and concerns both the aluminum rolling sector of ElvalHalcor and the shareholders, while the second certification with the ASI Chain of Custody, concerns those customers who request materials with corresponding certification.

Duration

System design preparation and compliance procedures with ASI Performance Standard started in 2020 and certification inspection took place in May 2020, while with ASI Chain of Custody standard preparation started in January 2021 and certification was successfully completed in August 2021. The implementation of the ASI standards is ongoing and aims to continuously improve Elval's ESG performance.

Description

Elval's commitment to implementing ESG practices and actions and adopting a responsible production model is long and strong. The development of a holistic sustainable development program for the aluminum rolling sector (Elval) of ElvalHalcor and its double certification by the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI), which today constitutes the world's most stringent package of sustainable development standards, documents in a practical way its dedication and commitment of the Company in this direction.

The Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is the latest development in the aluminum value cycle. It was established as a standardization and certification organization in issues related to responsible aluminum production, with the aim of involving companies with high performance, among other things, in issues of sustainability, so that these companies eventually create responsible supply chains. Through the two standards it issues, it sets the specifications and provides the coherent framework where producers, users and participants in the value cycle of the material, are committed to its responsible production, supply and management. The ASI Performance Standard examines the full range of ESG issues applicable to the industry. By combining all available practices, it includes a set of 59 sustainability criteria for each aspect of an organization's ESG performance.

Elval's ESG strategy as adapted through the implementation of the ASI Performance Standard provides a complete, coherent and structured program for integrating sustainability criteria into the corporate governance model it applies.

It covers all its activities and more specifically:

- in matters of Environmental Protection (E), setting as a requirement tangible, measurable and implementable plans for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the rational management of emissions and waste, the rational use of water and the protection of water resources and the protection of biodiversity.

- in matters of Social Responsibility, (S), examining the Company's practices, but also evaluating its supply chain in the protection of Human Rights, the avoidance of discrimination, the defense of women's rights and labor rights and the promotion of safety and health , employees, visitors and shareholders of the company.

- in Corporate Governance (G) matters, focusing on good governance with a practical commitment to anti-corruption, legislative compliance in every aspect of its activity, taking care of reporting and investigating complaints, formulating and implementing ESG policies , programs to reduce the environmental footprint of its products and the development of environmentally friendly products and solutions, the implementation of a recycling strategy and actions for the collection of aluminum products at the end of their life cycle.

The design of the System and the procedures for compliance with the requirements of the ASI Performance Standard was carried out with the active participation of all Elval departments/Managements and the implementation of these procedures is done daily through the expanded participation of employees (e.g. implementation of corporate policies, submission of improvement proposals on ESG issues, etc.).

The evaluation of the effectiveness of the system is done by an independent Certification Body, through an open process involving internal and external stakeholders (employees, representatives of the local community, customers, suppliers and others). These participants are invited to evaluate, without the involvement of the Company, its performance in matters related to the Environment, Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance (ESG).

In this way, the certification of Elval (ElvalHalcor's aluminum rolling sector) receives an expanded evaluation, both in terms of its practices and in terms of its impact on its stakeholders.

The ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) strategy based on the ASI Performance Standard is a dynamic model that is constantly evolving. At its heart is the requirement for continuous improvement, goal setting and taking actions to achieve these goals. The continuous monitoring of performance, by internal and external stakeholders and the periodic inspection by an independent body, confirms the Company's commitment in this direction.

The adoption of the principles of sustainable development through the implementation of the most demanding sustainability standards that control the entire supply chain and value chain of aluminum, is expected to be the dominant trend in the global market with the aim of documenting responsible production of products and materials to shape the way they are produced, traded, recycled and reused, based on the principles of the circular economy.

The opportunity is thus presented even for the consumer to be able to choose a certified product in all its production stages and until it is available to him.

Impact on Society

An important result is Elval's initial certification to the ASI Performance Standard, but equally important and valuable is the certification according to the second standard of the ASI initiative, the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) standard.

The implementation of the procedures that frame the two standards with the participation of all employees, aims at the continuous improvement of the aluminum rolling sector (Elval) of ElvalHalcor in ESG matters and at the same time the possibility of satisfying some of the leading customers of the sector, delivering them certified products according to ASI CoC .

By aligning Elval's ESG strategy with the ASI Performance Standard, it ensures the successful implementation of the principles of responsible aluminum production. Every step of material procurement, production and recycling is governed by the application of sustainability criteria, including:

  • The supply of raw Materials and metal is made only by suppliers who undertake commitments to ESG criteria and are evaluated for this. All of Elval's critical suppliers have undergone Due Diligence and the process is being extended to others.
  • The environmental footprint of its products is evaluated by applying structured Life Cycle Assessments and targets are set for its further reduction, through the application of specialized tools and the implementation of processes in product design.

In a broader context, the certification of Elval's ESG strategy in accordance with the requirements of the ASI Performance Standard constitutes in a practical way the undertaking of a joint commitment with the leading producers in the world who have undertaken corresponding action, towards a sustainable aluminum production.

Accordingly, in order to obtain the ASI CoC certification, Elval harmonized its procedures in order to meet another 48 criteria, implementing an integrated electronic control and management system for importing CoC-certified raw material, then processing it at the facilities in Inofyta and finally delivery and shipment to customers who require such materials accompanied by their respective certificates.

Regarding the use of scrap aluminum as a raw material for the production of products, the standard separates and categorizes it according to its origin, i.e. whether it is before or after use by the consumer (pre-consumer or post-consumer).

The system has the ability to record the movement of this first material (material in – material out) at any time.

The entire above system assumes that the suppliers of the first material are certified and they meet the same standard. This ensures that the supplier also faithfully follows the ESG strategy to the extent necessary. Inspections for certification according to the requirements of the standards were carried out by the external body DNV GL.

Benefits for Οrganization

Elval aims to implement a modern model of corporate governance, in accordance with the imperatives of sustainable development, responsible production and the principles of the circular economy. Its certification according to the ASI Performance Standard ensures its practical commitment to society's demand to take meaningful actions for sustainable development and environmental protection against climate change.

The benefit of this certification is twofold:

(a) The emergence of Elval as a pillar of sustainability in the aluminum sector, with an international strong and recognizable certification. The publication of the result of its compliance with each of the 59 ESG criteria of the ASI Performance Standard is practical documentation of the organization's commitment to the path of sustainable development.

(b) Based on ASI's objective, certified facilities, such as the aluminum rolling sector-Elval, create responsible supply chains, where each link has been evaluated by the same strict sustainability standards and its performance is documented. Among them, it is possible to procure, process and sell, certified - according to ASI - material, which will be the result of the best available sustainability practices. A material that reaches consumption with the CoC (Chain of Custody) seal according to ASI, is a product of high added value that only the leading aluminum companies are able to make available. This capability ranks ElvalHalcor among the leading international companies in the aluminum value chain.

Additional benefits for the Company from this certification are:

  • Satisfaction of customers, partners, employees, local society and other involved parties.
  • Increasing the competitive advantage of the Company at the sectoral, national and international level and the possibility of penetrating into "niche markets".
  • Seal of Commitment to Sustainable Development.
  • Improved evaluation based on ESG criteria by stock market analysts and investment bodies.
