Insurance Program in Case of Re-Transplantation

Insurance Program in Case of Re-Transplantation
SUBMITTED FROM:

Hellenic Heart-Lung Transplant Association

Objective Action

The Panhellenic Heart-Lung Transplant Association "SKYTALI" was founded in 1991 as the "Association of Severe Cardio-Pulmonary Patients" by 32 people who had either undergone a heart or lung transplant or suffered from some kind of severe cardio-pulmonary disease and the transplant was the only treatment option. They were the first Greek transplant patients who had returned from abroad and were transplanted mainly by the internationally renowned heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacub at Harefield Hospital in Great Britain and other centers.

As far as Greece is concerned, the MTX of the heart started in April 1990 in Hygeia (Athens) and then in Evangelismos (Athens) and G. Papanikolaou (Thessaloniki). Since 1993, patients from abroad have been the first group of patients with whom the Heart-Lung MTX Unit of the Onassios Cardiac Surgery Center - O.K.K. began its operation. as a follow-up center for transplant patients before officially starting heart transplants in 1995.

Since then, the heart/lung transplant recipients have been trying to acquaint the Greek society with the idea of "Organ Donation" and transplants through numerous events.

Transplanted patients are threatened by the possible rejection of the transplant with the only solution being retransplantation. Unfortunately, the availability of transplants in our country is meager, the waiting list is very long and leads chronic transplant recipients to look for solutions in transplant centers abroad.

Due to the financial crisis, even state funds no longer grant retransplantations abroad for heart-lung.

Knowing this, the members of our association and given the growing financial hardship of the Greek funds for hospitalization & diagnostic tests, authorized the Board of Directors to address private insurance companies requesting that members be given insurance coverage at an international level in terms of choosing a medical center for the purpose of heart failure operation of the transplant and - re-transplantation.

Since 2009, ETHNIKI ASFALISTIKI has, for the first time in the world, developed such a pioneering program that overcomes decades-old insurance prejudices that exclude transplant recipients from insurance.

This contract ensures:

- the possibility of access to an MTX center abroad because grafts are few in Greece,

- the provision of diagnostic tests in Greece 1,569 euros per year in private diagnostic centers nationwide,

- the contracts are individual and cost as much as for a healthy insurable citizen of the respective age and sex.

The program has already been successfully operating for 10 years and members' premiums are paid equally by the financial support of companies, organizations and benefactors through donations who understand the absolute necessity of this policy.

Target Audience

It is addressed to everyone

Duration

The insurance program in case of re-transplantation is in development, as the insurance policies of the members of the collective are paid every year.
