MANAGEMENT BODY OF LAKE PAMVOTIS

The establishment of the Management Body of Lake Pamvotis (M.B.L.P.), was based on the laws 1650/86 & 3044/99 and was constituted in January, 2003. The Board of Directors consists of 9 members, according to the Common Ministerial Decision (135074/5193 / Official Government Gazette no. 1531 – 9/12/2002). It is a private for public benefit organization governed by public law, supervised by the Minister of Environment.

The purpose of the M.B.L.P. is to preserve the ecosystem, to restore and maintain the ecological balance of Pamvotis Lake and to promote human and economic activities under the principles of sustainability. The combination of nature’s conservation with the support of development activities is the aim and at the same times the challenge for the Management Body. The contribution of the local community is essential and crucial to the success of this goal.

Objective Action

Information-awareness is a key responsibility of the Pamvotida Lake Management Agency of Ioannina (N.4519 FEK25/20.02.2018, article 4, par.1c), within the framework of which every year various information-awareness actions are organized for school groups and the local community . Information-awareness can contribute decisively to redefining the relationship between man and the natural environment, but also to the active participation of citizens in environmental issues and in particular in the problems faced by the lake. The aim of the environmental information-awareness programs is, through constant contact with the lake's ecosystem, as well as the acquisition of knowledge and skills, to gradually shape what we call environmental consciousness. In particular, the objectives pursued are:

  • Acquaintance - interpretation of the Pamvotida Lake ecosystem
  • Familiarity - familiarity with basic concepts such as Protected Areas, ecosystem, biodiversity, water cycle, protection and management, phenomenon of eutrophication.
  • Familiarity with the multiple values of Pamvotida Lake (biological, fishing, irrigation, recreational, educational, scientific, flood control, etc.)
  • Update on the pressures faced by the Pamvotida lake ecosystem.

Target Audience

The Pamvotida Lake Management Agency of Ioannina, through its environmental information-awareness programs, addresses school groups, students, visitors of all ages from Greece and abroad, as well as citizens of the local community.
