Description

Through a pioneering corporate responsibility program, Bayer Hellas invests in the development and support of social innovation solutions through its collaboration with MKO Science Communication (SciCo) and ScienceForYou (SciFY).

After the devastating fire in Mati, Bayer Hellas, in addition to directly supporting those affected with the company's products, pledged to support the social innovation initiative of SciCo and SciFY, which organized the Fireathon marathon whose purpose was to develop technological fire safety detection solutions , recording and extinguishing fires and the presentation of prototypes and decided to sponsor the initiative.

Citizens' response to the initial call was immediate and 65 strangers worked together for a month developing their proposals. The shortlisted ideas advanced to the marathon which started on September 21, 2018. After 3 days, numerous lines of code, leveraging open data and different interconnected sources as well as knowledge and experience from examples from other countries, the teams managed to build 6 prototypes which involved in issues such as educating and informing citizens, predicting and organizing crisis management and responding to incidents in real time.

The solutions are developed in a participatory manner and that is why the Fireathon has brought to the table agencies and municipalities that are affected by fires every year, the Fire Service, Civil Protection, volunteer groups, specialist scientists and as many specialized professionals as are willing to offer their training so that the take into account real needs and co-shape practices and come up with usable solutions.

Impact on Society

With Fireathon, we don't just develop solutions. It is a new and bold venture that creates knowledge and raises hopes.

• It is new and bold because it is one of the few times that a project brings together strangers to form teams that will create complex solutions that require the cooperation of many people, agencies and technology.

• Creates knowledge and skills because we train and support teams in the development and evolution of ideas, in obtaining support for their venture, in methods and techniques, in collaboration.

• It gives hope because it follows a cooperative approach: The groups do not act competitively, but help each other. It gives hope because it is another proof that new solutions can emerge from major crises, for which NGOs, citizens, innovative companies collaborate.

The start was unexpectedly good, but it was obvious that while Fireathon could bring great results, it could only be developed further with significant financial and organizational support. What results are we expecting? A technological solution developed by citizen groups that will be offered free of charge and piloted in selected Municipalities It will be installed in a real environment free of charge to interested Municipalities.
