Objective Action

The aim of the refugee education program is to provide non-formal education and remedial teaching to minors and adults refugees and immigrants. To contribute to the smooth integration of children into the education system, through innovative educational methods and to help the social integration and smooth integration of adults into society. The program was designed to meet the expanded needs arising from the increasing flows of refugees and migrants to Greece.

Target Audience

The actions are aimed at refugee and immigrant children aged 3-17 and their parents, who come from different linguistic cultures (Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Kurdish). They belong to the vulnerable population groups, face integration problems in the school and social environment and live either in refugee accommodation structures or in the urban fabric. In addition, these programs are also aimed at unaccompanied refugee and immigrant minors.

Duration

From March 2019 until today. (the program is essentially a continuation of the previous non-formal education programs of ELIX that it has been implementing since 2015).

Description

The programs are designed to provide daily coverage of the educational needs of children aged 3-17 and study support for school-going children aged 6-15. Specifically, the actions of the program include:

• Preschool education courses for children aged 3-5 years.

• Greek language lessons for children aged 6-17.

• English language lessons for children aged 6-17 years.

• Science lessons for children aged 6-17.

Parents are provided with basic social skills (life skills) and Greek and English language lessons.

Each beneficiary attends 2 hours of lessons per day (10 hours per week), which are carried out in the morning or afternoon. The implementation of this program involved both Greek teachers and native language teachers who came from the refugee and immigrant population itself in the process of educational support for the children who were most affected by this crisis. Social workers also participate in the actions, who identify the particularly vulnerable cases and provide additional support.
