"The Smile of the Child" has supported more than 1,200,000 children and their families. Children victims of all forms of Violence, Children victims of Extinction, Children with health problems, Children who are or are threatened with poverty, have found a solution.



Objective Action

From the very beginning, "The Smile of the Child" has been on alert to respond to the ever-increasing requests for support of children and their families due to the pandemic. The services were enriched following the new and constantly changing social, health and economic conditions.

Description

"The Smile of the Child" developed a strict management protocol for all internal issues of the Organization to ensure the health of the ~300 children it grows in its 11 Houses, the tens of thousands of children it supports and of course its ~500 employees and thousands of volunteers .

The services were enriched following the new and constantly changing social, health and economic conditions.

Impact on Society

1. With a telephone, free and anonymous, 24 hours a day, every day on the SOS Line 1056 (designated as an Emergency Line and interconnected with the European Emergency Number 112). (2020: 198.653 calls - 2021: 190.153 calls)

  • Counseling and Social support (2020: 4,798 people - 2021: 3,610 people)
  • Anonymous or named reports of child abuse (2020: 1,123 anonymous and named reports for 2,009 children - 2021: 884 named and anonymous reports for 1,559 children)
  • Need for blood and platelets
  • Providing guidance on each topic and interfacing with other services
  • Telephone connection to doctors for children's health problems
  • Individual counseling via Skype by Psychologists
  • Chat Application 1056, with which children will be able to communicate with the Psychologists and Social Workers of the Line, with the kind support of the General Directorate of Informatics of NBG. (2021: 1,040 communications in CHAT 1056)
  • On-site intervention for children who are in immediate danger and their transfer to a safe environment in cooperation with the competent Police and Prosecutorial Authorities (2020: 144 on-site interventions for 223 children who were in immediate danger - 2021: 141 on-site interventions for 203 children)

2. With a phone, free and anonymous, 24 hours a day, every day on the European Hotline for Disappearances 116000 (2020: 10,421 calls - 2021: 11,028 calls)

  • Management of missing minors aged 0 to 18 (2020: 101 children searched - 2021: 124 children searched)
  • Management of missing adults aged 18 to 60 belonging to vulnerable and high-risk groups (2020: 50 adults sought - 2021: 81 adults sought)
  • Activation of the "Thanasis Makris" Search and Rescue team (2020: for 7 children and 5 adults team activation - 2021: for 8 children and 28 adults team activation)
  • Activation of Amber Alert Hellas for cases of disappearance of minors (2020: for 18 children activation - 2021: for 4 children activation)
  • Activation of Missing Alert Hellas for cases of disappearance of adults (2020: for 35 adults activation - 2021: for 31 adults activation)

3. With a telephone, free and anonymous, 24 hours a day, every day on the European Line for the support of Children and Adolescents 116111 (2020: 7,411 calls - 2021: 2,437 calls)

  • Individual counseling via Skype by Psychologists
  • Providing support to children, parents, teachers, etc. for any matter concerning a child

4. Support for children with health problems (2020: 13,511 children - 2021: 7,997 children)

  • Nationwide transportation of newborns and children with our Organization's Mobile Medical Intensive Care Units (Ambulances) (2020: 2,566 newborns and children, 881 adults - 2021: 2,211 newborns and children, 1,309 adults)
  • Coverage of children's medical needs (2020: 1,561 children - 2021: 1,602 children)
  • Medical examinations and vaccinations for children (2020: 318 children - 2021: 426 children)
  • Telephone connection with doctors
  • Pediatric home care for children with chronic and serious health problems who remain at home. (2020: 556 children - 2021: 544 children)

5. Supporting children and their families with living problems (2020: 20,219 children - 2021: 16,928 children)

  • Support with food and basic necessities from the 15 Support Centers nationwide (Athens, Heraklion, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Corfu, Corinth, Larissa, Lesbos, Patras, Pyrgos, Tripoli, Chalkida, Chania)
  • Home deliveries of items to families with serious problems and objective mobility difficulties, e.g. children with chronic and serious health problems

7. Update/Communication

  • Informative articles by the Organization's scientific staff (doctors, psychologists, social workers) are posted on www.hamogelo.gr and on the Organization's social media.
  • On the Organization's social media, we accept the questions and concerns of parents/guardians, teachers, children, etc. Answers are given by the scientific staff of the Organization.
  • Special "Ask the Smile" themed webcasts, dealing with the management of all issues that concern adults and children in relation to the coronavirus. Doctors, psychologists and social workers participate in the shows and answer the viewers' questions.

8. Voluntary blood donation actions nationwide (2020: 32 voluntary blood donation stations / 1,643 blood bags - 2021: 27 voluntary blood donation stations / 1,067 blood bags)

  • Voluntary blood donation actions nationwide, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other agencies such as G.G. Sports, the EKEA etc. "The Smile of a Child" made available the Mobile Operation Center "ODYSSEAS" as well as the necessary human resources

9. Interconnection of the SOS Line 1056 with the Psychosocial Support Telephone Line for the coronavirus 10306

  • Interconnection of the National Children's SOS Line 1056 with the Psychosocial Support Telephone Line for the coronavirus 10306, created by the Ministry of Health. "The Smile of the Child" took over all the calls concerning children and their families.

10. Support for victims of domestic violence (2021: Support for 76 children with their mothers who have suffered domestic violence)

  • Supporting care services for women and their children, victims of domestic violence, in collaboration with G.G. of Equality and Family Policy and the European Network against Violence.

11. Participation in the "Freedom" operation by assisting in 2021 more 460,000 vaccinations in island regions and Northern Greece

12. Smile Academy Education Educational activity for the implementation of distance learning courses with the voluntary participation of teachers. The action is kindly supported by CISCO.

(2020: prevention interventions / remedial teaching / educational seminars / 2,950 participations / 3014.5 hours - 2021: 914 participations of employees for a total duration of 3160 hours of education, training and/or training. / 6 participations of Adult Children in lifelong learning and training actions , of a total duration of 180 hours. / 1389 participations of volunteers in educational meetings of a total duration of 466.5 hours. / 2417 participations of professionals in educational meetings of a total duration of 167.5 hours. / 66 participations of students in the context of seminar training of a total duration of 15 hours. / 567,500 views and 54 learner participations from the general public in the training sessions organized, with a total duration of 21 hours.)

Working with Organization

Nothing would have been achieved and would not have continued with the same consistency, continuity and quality, without the valuable support of the citizens who, despite the difficulties, support the efforts of businesses in every way.

From the first moment, "The Smile of the Child" put its services, human resources and logistical equipment at the disposal of the competent authorities, thus contributing to dealing with the many and multifaceted consequences of the pandemic.

Workers Participation

Always with absolute observance of the health protocols, as dictated by the institutionally responsible bodies, a decisive role in the implementation of the actions in the context of the pandemic was played mainly by the employees and additionally by the volunteers of the Organization.

It is noted that a decisive role in the management of this emergency situation in the first 6 months was played by the Organization's Crisis Management Group, which was formed immediately, made up of the coordinators of the actions, with great experience.

The team members were in constant communication and cooperation, while at the same time minutes were kept of the regular and extraordinary meetings.
