MUNICIPALITY OF FYLI

The Municipality of Fylis is a municipality of the Attica region that was established under the Kallikratis program. It arose from the amalgamation of the pre-existing municipalities of Fyli, Ano Liosion and Zefyrio.

In the Municipality of Fylis, the program has been operating since October 2017 with the Title of Action: Structures for the Provision of Basic Goods: Social Grocery Store-Social Cooperative -Social Pharmacy of the Municipality of Fylis" with OPS code MIS 5001831, which has been included in the Priority Axis "Promoting Social Integration and Combating of Poverty and Discrimination - Ensuring Social Cohesion" in the Operational Program Attica 2014-2020. Description

Three essential interventions are included in the Green Up - Live Up project and concern the creation of "Pocket Park", the action "Olive Source of Life Program" and the Highlighting of the Natural Wealth of Western Parnitha. In the "Tsouklidi" district of the Ano Liosion municipal unit, the first "Tsepis Park" was created for the Municipality of Fylis. "Tsepis Park" received positive comments from the residents of the district as it has become a safe place for meeting and socializing in the midst of a pandemic. The specific area was cleaned, beautified and equipped with ecological lighting from photovoltaics and LEDs creating a special feeling of security at night in the neighborhood. With the "Olive Source of Life Program", the Municipality of Fylis, wanting to develop the city economically, aesthetically and ecologically, supplies olive trees to the citizens who own undeveloped plots of land and assists in their planting and maintenance with the cultivation advice of the specialized scientific staff who has. The olive tree has been cultivated in the Municipality of Fylis since ancient times until today, due to the good soil and climate conditions, it is the most important agricultural crop and source of agricultural income for its inhabitants. For this reason and in combination with the importance of olive oil as a product of great economic and social importance (the gross value of its production represents 12.5% of the gross vegetable production of the country and 46.5% of the gross agricultural income) it chooses the olive for the planting program.

The "Elia Source of Life Program" is expected to have positive results in the Municipality of Fylis. With the planting of olive trees, the urban greenery will be increased and the three Municipal Units will be aesthetically improved by demarcating, cleaning and planting the vacant unstructured plots.

Planting, for those interested, will contribute to increasing the family financial budget, with a stable additional income, after a few years. In addition, the productive culture of the citizens will be promoted and may be an occasion for new productive activities among the young people. The widespread planting of olive trees will contribute to the improvement of the quality of life by improving the microclimate and enriching the atmosphere with oxygen, while the barren lands will be protected from erosion and all that this entails (floods, etc.), especially in sloping areas. The water table will be enriched, helping to increase water resources by retaining water in planted areas. Finally, the biodiversity of the environment will be preserved and increased

of ecological balance at a local scale. We prefer four-year-old Megarite olive seedlings, well developed, with lateral branches along the entire length of the central trunk. These seedlings show better growth and enter fruiting earlier.

To plant the olive seedlings, we first mark the planting positions with a 5 meter distance from one tree to the other and then we open large pits measuring 50x50 centimeters. When planting the seedlings, we plant at the same depth as they were in the nursery and make sure the loose topsoil falls to the base of the root system, below the olive tree's soil ball. We add soil until the pits are filled, pressing the soil lightly so as not to damage the root system. Along with the planting of the olive trees, the installation of the support stakes is also done. After planting, we will water the young olive trees well.

Finally, the Highlighting of the Natural wealth of the Western Parnitha within the limits of the Municipality of Fylis is a central goal of the Green Up - Live Up Project. The ecological importance of the Parnitha massif for Attica is non-negotiable. Through a series of studies, the Municipality of Fylis attempts to initially record the forest areas within its administrative boundaries, the flora and fauna of the area as well as its geological wealth. Through extensive research, the vulnerabilities and risks that need targeted interventions are highlighted in order to ensure the continuity of its wealth and its transfer to the next generations. In addition, a fire protection study was carried out that demonstrates measures to prevent, pre-suppress and suppress potential fires. In order to highlight the natural wealth of Western Mount Parnitha, a specialized study was carried out to restore and signal the network of tourist routes, as well as a study to highlight existing forest recreation infrastructure and create new ones within the forest of Mount Parnitha. The promotion and protection of the natural wealth of Parnitha is included in the Operational Program of the Municipality of Fylis for the period 2020-2024.

Impact on Society

The Green Up – Live Up Project has a positive effect on the lives of citizens. The "Pocket Park" and the "Elia Source of Life Program" were immediately and warmly accepted by the citizens. The ambitious project to highlight and protect the natural wealth of western Parnitha has a positive impact not only on the residents of the Municipality of Fyli who are lucky enough to live in the mountainous mass of Parnitha as it happens for the residents of the municipal unit of Fyli or to live at a breathing distance from him like the residents of the municipal units of Ano Liosion and Zephyrio. The promotion and protection of the natural wealth of western Parnitha has positive externalities both for the neighboring municipalities as well as regionally and nationally.
