Objective Action

The goal is to provide help through therapy sessions to children with learning disabilities (e.g. joint disorders, motion, ADHD, etc.) or children who have been diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder so as to help them overcome these difficulties to a large extent. This way, a great burden is removed from their shoulders and they are free to keep on with their lives with confidence and peace of mind.

Target Audience

The provided services address to children and teens aged from 3 to 17.

Duration

2006 - today

Description

Every child has different needs and abilities and displays any learning difficulties in his or her own particular way. In the educational psychology centers, children attend scheduled one-to-one or group sessions tailored to accommodate their needs. Each session lasts for 45 minutes and includes speech therapy, occupational therapy and special education courses. In addition, the educational psychology centers provide psychological support and counseling programs for both the children and their families.

Therapeutic intervention is combined with suitable support counseling for both parents and children so that problems encountered can be resolved as soon as possible. Keeping parents informed on a regular basis as well as collaborating with school teachers are considered not only useful but also essential. Full coverage for the services rendered is provided under the Social Security System for users and their families. Moreover, services are provided at no cost to poor and uninsured persons (http://www.edra-coop.gr/en/psixopaidagogika-kentra.html).

Impact on Society

The last year, five information sessions were held in schools within and outside Attica. The theme was "learning disabilities" and the audience consisted of teachers and parents. Also, two awareness campaigns took place, with "Milonas Foundation" and "I have an opinion, I have a voice" as partners. Finally, one scientific workshop in cooperation with the municipality of Aghioi Anargyroi- Kamatero. A total of 785 families, 110 of which were poor or uninsured, benefited from the provided services. The centers also contibuted to fight poverty and social exclusion. As far as the impact on target audience (ie children and their families) is concerned, many children overcame the difficulties they faced by completing their sessions. Also, teachers and parents were well informed and sensitized regarding learning difficulties and helped themselves to shake off stereotypes and reluctance both for themselves and people around them.
