In recent years, the Municipality of Heraklion has been systematically organizing free guided tours of the city center, aiming to acquaint the target groups with the unique, long history of the city and its rich cultural background.
There are two main categories of tours according to their content:
Thematic, City Tours tours,
The educational tours with the use of mobile devices (tablets).
It is an innovative action with very positive comments from users, since the acquaintance with the city and its history is done in a friendly and modern way, where the user essentially discovers the hidden state of Venetian rule by composing the puzzle of its varied history in time.

The educational tours are addressed to primary and secondary school students and students. The students who are guided come from schools in Heraklion, Crete and the rest of Greece. Groups of students from European countries participating in European ERASMUS programs are often guided. It is self-evident that the city-tours as well as the educational tours organized by the Department of Tourism of the Municipality of Heraklion, show in an experiential and friendly way the rich history of the city and modern Heraklion to anyone who wants to get to know them, acquiring a special an experience that will be unforgettable, but also that he will want to communicate. It is self-evident that the city-tours as well as the educational guided tours organized by the Department of Tourism of the Municipality of Heraklion show in an experiential and friendly way the rich history of the city and modern Heraklion to anyone who wants to get to know them, gaining a special experience that he will be unforgettable, but also that he will want to communicate.
The Tour Program (through assignments) is implemented from the year 2018. The last assignment concerns a contract until the end of June 2021 (with the possibility of extending this contract for an additional 9 months).
Heraklion, city trips, acquaintance with history and culture, an experiential experience with two main categories of tours according to their content:
A) Themes, City Tours, historical, religious and gastronomic content (historical, religious and gastronomic content) addressed to individual visitors of the city, conference groups and groups with special abilities.
B) Educational oriented to the history and culture of the city, with emphasis on the Venetian period. The tours are done with the use of mobile devices (tablets) with an installed application that turns the screen into a "window" in time, unfolding in front of him the image of the Venetian city, Candia of 1640.
The educational tours are implemented in cooperation with the bodies of the Regional Directorate of Education (Primary and Secondary), with bodies of Higher education of public and private character. These tours are made using tablets, with an installed application of a three-dimensional representation of the Venetian city of Candia (ie Heraklion during the Venetian occupation where it was the capital of the Kingdom of Crete). In the educational tour the interaction between user and mobile device offers the possibility of experience in another time but always in the same place with information about the history of the city, the monuments, the culture. The screen of the user's mobile device turns into a "window" in time, unfolding in front of him the image of the Venetian city, Candia of 1640.
The benefits that result from the tour program are particularly important since the Municipality offers on an annual basis, a different "experiential experience" to young children, tomorrow's visitors to the city, in groups of Greek and foreign visitors, to anyone who wants to get to know the city, its rich history, its cultural wealth, modern Heraklion, through different approaches, in a direct, understandable, very popular, experiential way.
In the case of thematic tours, the visitors of our city are given the opportunity to choose one of the offered modules, based on their interests:
• "A walk in the city… A walk in history…",
where the story starts from the Morosini fountain or differently from Nikiforos Fokas Square (Lions) and the visitor has the opportunity to tour the main road of yesterday and today.
• "Churches of the Great Castle" where always starting from the Lions the visitors tour the Christian Monuments (Agios Titos, Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Minas, small Agios Minas, church of St. Catherine of Sinai which functions as a Museum of Christianity Of St. Matthew with the icons of the Cretan School).
• "Tastes and Smells…" where the visitor starting from the Lions is looking for the steamy traditional bougatsa! And immediately after it can go up the street of the Central Market, 1866 street, with its "loaded" shops with food, spices, Cretan oil and cheese, herbs of the Cretan land, olives, local wine, raki, all the good of the place spread out on the counters and in the windows of the refrigerators.
The reference point and coordination of city tours is the Info - Point, operated by the Department of Tourism, an innovative and interactive visitor information space for Heraklion and all of Crete. Info - Point is today the only place where the visitor gets information to be able to travel and get to know Crete.
The place is also of educational interest as during the educational tours the students visit the Info - Point to be informed about the history of the island, the beauties and the monuments of the city of Heraklion, with the use of modern technology, innovative interactive systems that are installed in the field that have been developed in collaboration with the Institute of Informatics of the Institute of Technology and Research.
In general, the visitor participates dynamically either with the use of the tablet, or in a thematic tour - walk and discovers the hidden city, with a different "story telling" each time, composing the puzzle of the story, participating himself using the tablet, or under the guidance of a tour guide.
In this way the value of the rich monumental background of the city will be appreciated. Especially for the subject of educational tours there is provision to be adapted to the annual projects implemented during the school year by the teachers of the two levels of education.
The novelty of the action of the tours lies in the fact that the visitor, whether a student or an adult, Greek or foreign, participates experientially, gaining - building his own personal experience from his visit to the city.

The tourist product of the city, which is mainly based on its rich cultural background (history, monuments) but also on the tradition and the gastronomic culture that characterize it, is highlighted through the guided tours.
Heraklion is no longer a one-dimensional destination with important monuments, but a multi-level place, where every visitor finds a variety of stimuli attractive especially for him and his interests. The story telling now becomes the personal experience - the story of every visitor who will gain in Heraklion guided by inspiration, creativity, good mood…
From 2018 until today, more than 5.500 people have been guided.
